Just to follow up on this, it's been about 9 days and he seems to be doing better. There's still a lighter colored spot on his head, but it definitely seems to be healing. Hopefully in a few more days it'll be gone.
I saw one other post that suggested that it might be a vitamin deficiency and that's quite possible because at the time this happened I had been feeding Mysis shrimp almost exclusively. He was eating them, but in retrospect they're probably not a great diet for a Kole Tang. He spent a lot of time nipping at algae on the glass and rocks, but he still may not have been getting enough.
After I posted this I ran out and got some nori and a clip and I've been feeding Nori soaked in Selco boost. It took him a day or two before he decided that the nori was food, but he's been grazing on it for a solid week now.
The first time I put it in my serpant star ran from one side of the tank to the other, climbed up the live rock and a purple sea fan and then grabbed onto the nori and sat there and ate for a while. I had no idea that guy could move so fast. After the first day or two he's mostly been ignoring it now. Guess he decided that it's not worth climbing for
And today he's totally back to normal... no signs of the spot at all. I have no idea what it was or why it went away, but everything seems healthy and happy now.
My Kole and Chevron come up with "white" patches some times. I attribute it to them trying to fit into tight rock spaces and its just an abrasion. Usually heals in a couple of days on mine.

Thanks Julie, hopefully I'll be less worried next time I see something like that then. This is a new fish for me and it happened shortly after he was added to the DT, so I was definitely a bit concerned.
