Kong's Restored BB (90g)

Well it sounds like a bitter sweet story. Glad to hear about the SPS turnaround!

I was also thinking about putting a layer of 1 to 3 inch sized crushed coral in my sump for some bio filtration. It would probably also serve as a good area for pod production, since I am not running a fuge due to lack of space. I also think this might help with nitrate reduction. I also have an unlimited supply of crushed coral here in Okinawa. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

I would not go with crush coral, and I would use that depth. That depth will not REDUCE nitrates; it will only make them. It will only house aerobic bacteria which will do little in reducing nitrates.

How deep is the RDSB and is the lid always closed? Do you have any invertebrates like snails in there or is it just left as is?

Thanks for the pics. That is exactly what I was looking for to use as a blueprint. What size pump are you using?

Thanks Again!

I think i've decided to add a RDSB to my system as well. I'm barebottom but really have nothing to lose--already have all the parts lying around.

Glad everything is getting better.

the DSB is aprox 9-10" thick! Pretty impressive.. 60lbs

No invertebrates are in it, because nothing for them to consume should get in there. I leave the lid closed because otherwise I might get salt spray.

Thanks for the pics Kong. I am considering doing something similar, but I'll let you be the guinea pig. :)
hehe.. well hopefully itll take my ~7ppm nitrates (which im sure are much lower after all the W/C's), and make them very low.

Maxijet 1200 that I had laying around.

There are a few BB'ers running these things, it seems. Leonardo runs one, for example, and his tank is pretty incredible.

How are you filtering the water to make sure no detrius (sp?) gets in there?
I am now running a filter sock from my main return, so water gets filtered by the filter sock, then goes pas the ATI BM250, and then the Maxijet gets it. There shouldnt be much detritus making it by all of that.

What about detritus?

lol.

I look forward to seeing your progress, negative or positive, with the RDSB.

I hope to have mine running in less than two weeks.

In the short term I dont forsee any negative issues. It's just a bucket of clean sand.

And long term, if it does act up, and my nitrates aren't dropping, all it takes is a few bags of sand to start over and about 1hr of light work :)

Read my above statement; filter socks and protein skimming are used before the bucket gets water.

Ahh, my bad. Well good luck with everything! I'll probably try one of these sand beds in a bucket too

Sorry.. I think that came off wrong :)... detritus shouldnt get to it, and from ive read from other's experience, that's important, because the RDSB isnt a place for detritus to be tucked away. You still need to get that stuff out of your system. The RDSB is just to process the nitrates after theyve already been released into the water.

I gotcha

No. I used some teflon tape, but the gaskets they came with worked perfectly. Not a single leak! Didnt even have to re-tighten them.. I was surpriesd.

I figure'd the rigid side of the instant ocean bucket wouldnt comform well (I also had some tropic marin buckets i could use.. those are thinner), but it worked, and no leaks.

Well, I just ordered new corals! LOL.. it's been 6months+ since I've purchased corals, so it has been very testing of my patience.

This weekend I purchased 2 LPS from a LFS -- I need to take pics of them, but theyre a nice red+green blasto with i'd say ~9 heads for like $80, and then a red+green trumpet coral I thought was pretty, and a watermelon yuma.

Then last night I ordered 3 corals from Live Aquaria's Diver's Den, AND 5 Apogon Leptcanthus!

Here are the pics of the corals:

I am anxious to try the cardinals again, but my understanding is that the Diver's Den fish are acclimated / quarantined to an extent, and tend to be in even better shape than normal LA offerings.
