Like she said- Ya gotta look long term or they're not going to be attractive at all. I did a cost break down to see how it pans out:

72" 13K LED Solaris- $3500 shipped

11 years worth of expenses:

With changing out 250 watt MH bulbs every 10 months, you're looking at 12 bulb changes- at 3 bulbs a pop and 70 bucks a bulb shipped that's $2520...

Then you have the ballast which are another $450 or so shipped...


Reflectors, if you go with lumenarcs, add another $450 to the pot...

Now we look at heat- With the major reduction in heat your system would not require a chiller so there's another $600+ in savings...

Anybody that has a large tank inside their house knows that the halides put off enough heat to keep the AC churning quite a bit in the summer- I would estimate another $10 or a month, 6 months out of the year equaling another $660....

And don't forget not needing timers, power strips and such- Probably another $50 or so.

Did I miss anything? Those things alone total over $4600 and we haven't even discussed the convenience factor yet. I imagine the ease and convenience of putting the thing up and forgetting about it for years would be pretty nice!

What is the light penetration of these things, like how deep a tank will they light?

From what I've read it's all relative to a set of 250watt 20K halides but the coral growth was great according to tests....
