landlord, rkelman...i am trying to catch the larvae tonight

Good luck Phil! How big are the 5 from the previous batch?

The first five are only now starting to show a teeny tiny peek of the third stripe.

Frag discs behind them give you an idea of scale. The stick-on thermometer in the foreground also for scale. In the right side you can barely make out the ammonia badge. I will try and get a better pic.

Just curious, when everyone is talking about "laying on a tile", what exactly does that mean?

I have a juv pair, but am trying to do my homework in advance.

Tile as in ceramic tile you get for your backsplash in the kitchen /bathroom or floor tile. When given a flat surface like a piece of tile - the clowns may use that surface area to lay eggs rather than say an immovable piece of LR or like my clowns - the back wall of my 120.

I don't miss scooping larvae out for an hour thats for sure. Get those suckers laying on a tile!

yes sir! :fun4:

Thought at this point I may take a break...all the rotifer, bbs growing and maintenance is time consuming.

Hmm - this looks fun. I really wish I had the time to do this. My clowns have been laying eggs for six months. This is the first batch that they didn't eat. They are laying the eggs right under their nem. The rock has a flat spot which I guess they prefer.

Here is my hijack question: Do they always hatch at night? My wife was hoping to see them hatch, but I doubt either of us would be able to time it very well.

Also, would the light from a 150W MH do a lot of harm to them - i.e. cause them to not hatch?

Great work phil - maybe someday I will have the patience to try this. :)

I do not think that they will hatch during the "lights on" You could try and time it such that on the day you expect them to hatch kill the lights about 2 hours early, turn off you pumps, make the tank dark (cover the glass with a towel. Take a peek in a couple hours and you might see something pretty darn cool.

flamron - thanks. It is exciting but a lot of work. I dunno how landlord does it.

They do hatch about 30 mins to 3 hrs after lights out (no moon light nothing). I then hook up a small LED light (supplemented with a small mag flashlight) and aim to a corner of the tank that I check. The fry will congregate near the top of the tank where the light is. Then I scoop em!

So my attrition rate is a lot worse this time around then when I started with 8.

Last time I started with 8 and I made it with 5 past meta. 62% success.

This time I started with over 100 and it's only day 3 and I've suffered 60% loss.

I am down to about 40 odd fry.

The main difference this time is that i did not co-culture the rotifers with the fry. I think that maybe I should have added more phyto in the fry tank for the rotifers to eat (and stay nutritious).
