Landlords Log - Breeding Percula Clowns

well bad news seems to come in bunches. I decided to transfer my 17 percs from the 10g to a different tank. I know I know - it was too early - but I did it before with the first batch and they were fine. Anyways - sure enough I stressed out 9 of them. It was like they dashed around quickly and then spasmed to death.

I wanted to just sit down and mourn. I was so sad. I went from 17 two stripe percs to 8 in a matter of minutes.

The reason for the move was that I felt the tank they were in was more suitable for the next fry batch (which did hatch a few hours later).

Anyways - kurt - was wondering when you feel the clowns are old enough to move/transfer. Mine were obviously too young - 3 weeks old. :(

I typically move them to a new tank when they are eating dry foods with GUSTO. By gusto I mean that when you drop in the food they go nuts for it. None of this poking around business, I mean nuts, like when you feed you display tank.

I do understand what you are going through, it's tough to let a hatch slide by becuase you do not have enough tanks available. I've come to learn it is better to skip a batch in order to keep a batch you've been working with happy.

...or you can buy more tanks to raise them in.

Sorry for your bad luck, my female is still swollen and will not lay more eggs.

:( Kurt

I would wait at least 3-4 weeks before moving the fry. I have found that we have the greatest survival rate if we wait.

Yeah, it can get out of hand. We now have three tanks going with varying batches of fry. We find the best way to keep the most fry alive is to have a small 1-2 gallon plastic tank submerged in the breeding tank. This allows for a lot less stress on the newborn fry. We move them to the grow out tank at about 3-4 weeks...

got it. Gusto = moveable.

Our club is going to participate in an event at a local science museum. I was thinking of bringing a few of the older percs (7 weeks old) and talk about conservation/buying captive-bred etc. These older ones are eating cyclopeeze with "gusto".

I'm sorry to hear about this female perc you have. She's a beauty.

Well thought I would toss out an update. The female laid 5 eggs yesterday, yup five! If anyone remembers (I guess you could read a page or two back) but the female of this pair has problems with her ovipositor and Yes again it looks like a big red pickle, poor lady. I wish I could figure it out but it seems like she'll lay some eggs and get bound up. She is a healthy active eater but just not meant for laying.

So maybe I'll try and capture the 5 fry when they hatch just so I can get something in a larval tank other than GSM's :)
