Landscaping Help

WI Reef Lover

This is probably a really stupid question...but...

I've been looking at the pics posted here of other peoples reef tanks. They look so pristine and beautiful. I clean my tank often, do water changes etc.......I do some kind of maintenance every week (lately everyday trying to rid myself of the hair algae).

When I beat the hair algae and get more of the coralline algae that seems to be growing faster now will my tank look that pristine.

Should i dump the background on the tank. Should I try changing the landscape. Do I have too much live rock? I know the tank is crowded.

( I have a friend who I'm going to help get a tank started and she is aiming for a reef so she can help me by taking some excess reef stock but it will be a while, at least I'll finally know someone who understands the passion.)

I upgraded to the larger tank about 5 months ago so I suppose it really is still young, the previous tank was a 29 that I had for about a year and a half and I guess this one still has some "breaking in" to go through yet. i don't really have the space to go any bigger right now.

Anyway, any suggestions on how to make my tank look nicer.
I'm feeling a little in adequate or is perfectly pristine all the time just a pipe dream and i'm beating myself up for nothing.

I'd like a better protein skimmer which I know would really help but i'm having a hard time finding one that's small and hangs on the outside. I bought a coralife super skimmer 65 on line but it's huge! Any suggestions on something small but effective would be greatly appreciated.

I think your tank looks great. Use ro/di, regular water changes, change your P04 every two to four weeks and keep your lights "new".

I'm using tap water actually. Whats PO4?
I've seen a lot of posts about using RO, I think I'm going to try that too. Is buying RO a good idea, do you really know what you're getting?

I think your tank looks amazing!!

RO/DI will help control aglae - look in the classifieds here on RC for a used RO unit I just got one for $40.

Actually got excited last night doing a water change w/ RO for the first time........I am such a dork.

you'r not a dork......the sight of my first copeped kept me on an emmotional high for a week....i get excited over the silliest little thing.

thanks for the tip on the RO units, i'll definately check that out.

i'm not quite up on the abbreviations yet, DI is distilled water...
right

DI stands for de-ionized water. Its commonly combined with a RO unit (reverse osmosis) to give you the absolute cleanest water possible.
