Large fish + rimless tank = ??

I have a elos 120xl and I have not had any problems with my fish except for my corral rabbitfish. He has takena liking to hanging out in the front corner which is fine, except for that if something startles him, hell race towards the back of tank, and if he does it right, hell splash a ton of water out of the fish tank =\ This wasn't much of a problem when he was smaller, but now that hes pushing 6-7 inches he can slosh out quite a bit. I can only imagine that it will get even worse as he gets larger. Hes my favorite fish in the tnak, but I dont know what Ill do if hes still sloshing water out when hes a foot long.

Does anyone else with a rimless tank have any experience to share wit their larger fish? Did you run into similar problems or did you find someithng that worked well?

Peace,
Jesse

My tank is not rimless but I have a Hippo Tang that does this all the time. The fish is pushing 6ish inches and really makes a mess sometimes. I was wondering why my tank was getting so much salt creep on the front glass and why there was water on the floor until I seen the fish do it one day. I dont know how you would get it to stop though...

Most outgoing larger fish will do this. You could try a more docile large fish; It would hide in the rocks more, and probably create less splashing as they're further situated "in" the reef.

or....get little fish :)

Kinda like tellin' a dog not to bark.......they're dogs........they bark.
Big fish = splashes

bummer...never thought about this. I was planning on a large rimless tank with large angels and tangs... may be something to think about.

I wonder if higher flow or maybe a wave box could "offset" these splashes.

And to be clear...they aren't really "splashes" ...as in water flies up into the air...its simply the fish making a wave and having the water come over the side of the rimless tank correct?

Its the fishes tail that causes the splash. Hell be sitting at the top of the water just barely breaching it, then decide to move quickly and some water will get sloshed over the edge but I have also water globules fly up to several feet away from the aquarium. I had to mvoe some electronics farther away from the tank to accomidate him =P

Just yesterday actually I changed the flow in my tank some to make the surface more trubuluent. Hopefully this will discourage him froms taying on the top.

Peace,
Jesse

I have a wavebox and trust me it doesn't change a thing you'll still get the splashes especially at feeding time , there is nothing to do

Just a quick update:

I changed the way my tunze were mounted in the tank so that they pointed more at the surface and caused a lot more surface turbulance. My larger rabbitfish has stopped his bad habbit of sitting in the corner at the surface, and I no longer have to wipe the salt of the tank 1-2 times a day. More like once a week now.

Peace

good to hear.

do you just take a rag and wipe the top inch or so of the glass on the inside all the way around? or do you find that salt creep actually gets to the top edge of the glass and the outside of the glass

dcmander-
Yah thats all I do now. Before though my fish was sloshing water over the lip, and down the side, so I had to wip down the inside, outside and stand... Much better now =P I scrape alagae more often then I clean the glass now so it really not a big deal anymore.

forddna-
I have about 130 pounds of LR in the tank(125g). The rocks are seperated in to a pillar on the left, and a sloped mound on the right. The pillar and the mountain's high point though are both within 3.5 inches of the surface.

I would try to lower the height and see if that helps. If it doesn't, you can always just put it back. :)

Hmm, I've not noticed this. I've got a large foxface who does spend his time at the surface, but never really splashes water out of the tank. Never really thought of it as an issue, but I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for it (the tank is rimless, but I have a canopy).

Lol... maybe my rabbitfish is just a punk. He gets realy crazy when hes hungry.
LOL, yea I had a couple viracious feeding rabbits in the past.

Glad to hear the flow helped thus far... I think lowering the rocks might help as well, cant hurt right?

Plus man, you've got a rimless tank, those are SICK, who cares if you have to wipe the glass more than me...Im still jealous! My tank is too big for rimless, otherwise I would've had one too ;)

how big is tooo big for rimless?? :D There are some monster rimless tanks out there...if you can afford 3/4" glass all the way around you can get a good size rimless tank :)

Do you have a picture of your rockwork? I'm undecided if i want the rock to come out of the water a little bit as a peak when i get a rimless tank or not.
