Large Scarlet Hermit's New Shell

Apparition

I've always kept hermit crabs in my reef and have never had problems with them. They've never even killed snails for their shells. I attribute this to the fact that I put dozens of shells in the tank for them to move into. Well, one scarlet hermit crab in particular has gotten pretty big and I was beginning to think he might kill a turbo snail for his shell if he got too big.

Well, I no longer have to worry because today he did one of the most interesting things I've ever had happen in my tank. When I first built my aquascape I used a two part putty to cement the rocks together. This was more or less successful, but I lost quite a few pieces behind the rockwork that I couldn't get to, but I never thought it was a problem so I didn't move anything to take them out.

Today I noticed a huge white glob moving across the rocks in my tank and so I rushed over to check it out. Needless to say, the large scarlet hermit scraped out a hole in a large piece of the putty and made a new shell out of it! I checked the back of the tank and sure enough, the largest piece was gone as well as a few other smaller pieces. I know everyone says they are opportunistic, but I didn't think they would go as far to build a new home for themselves. If I can get some pics I'll post them up.
