Last Try to Kill Bryopsis!!!!

:debi:I cooked my live rock for 2 months only to have it return. Then I took a scraper to it to only have it grow back again. Today and Yesterday I dosed extra Tech-M Magnesium at 40mls each day to raise my mag to 1500 ppm from 1350 ppm. I don't want to post pictures I am so ashamed of all the Bryopsis and Bubble algea trying to take over everything. Even my snails are twice the size from all the algea growing on their shells. I have a 46 bow display with a 38 gallon refugium. I pray this will work for me as it has worked for others without any damage to corals and other inverts.:headwalls:

I took care of mine, how long has the tank been set up? I'm sure these questions ahve already been answered before, maybe not, but using RO/DI? You running a reactor with GFO/Carbon, filter socks, and what about your feeding schedule?

Hang in there, High levels of magnesium worked for me. I also got a TDS meter and made shure all of the water I used was as close to 0 TDS as possible

Bryopsis?

Bryopsis?

Thank you for the replies, I do not use filter socks but I do have some of the sock material I can add it to my return from the refugium. I also have a two little fishes reactor but it is not running right now due to lack of funds.... I am trying to get a part time job for some extra income...:hmm3:

Well I'm sorry to say that you will not win this battle unless you rid the tank of the problem. The problem isn't the algae, it's what is causing the algae to grow. You have to clean your water so the algae doesn't have to. You can kill the algae with mag, pull it out, cook it, but it will keep coming back until your water quality is better.

You first want to make sure you are using good 0 TDS water so that you are not adding anything during water changes and do a large water change. I've seen phosphates in water with 0 tds so make sure you test your new salt water for phosphates to make sure you are not adding them that way. Second you need to get a reactor running with good GFO and Carbon. If you can't get that reactor running then get some GFO/Carbon in a filter sock and stick it where as much water will flow through as possible. If you have a skimmer then run it a bit on the wet side. You also need to get some algae growing in a place you don't mind it such as a refugium, cheato or algae scrubber. If you don't have a refuge then get some algae that would be ok in the display. Once all this is done then you can start removing/killing the bryopsis/bubble algae either manually or with mag, but not until you fix the other stuff.

Good luck! I am still battling mine too. I am at about 98% gone with the treatment of Tech-m. I plan on dosing it for many months in smaller amounts when it is gone to keep it away.

Here's my experience - Tech-M will effectively rid you of all visible signs of bryopsis for a period of time. It's worked for me twice. BUT there will be hidden caches of bryopsis in dark parts of the tank that will survive and come back if you don't have aggressive phosphate/nutrient reduction (skimming, GFO, carbon dosing, etc.). The combination of Tech-M and then maintaining low nutrient levels is the only thing that seems to work for bryopsis.

Bryopsis Battle!!!

Bryopsis Battle!!!

I went out last night and got the things I needed. I have my reactor going with fresh ferric oxide and put a 100 micron sock on the return from my refugium to the display. Tested for Phosphates 3 times and reading was zero each time...:hmm2:

your reading is going to be zero because all your algae is eating it up as it's doing it's job. use that gfo and filter filter filter

I would still dose a little of your tech-m and don't remove algae yet. you will know when to start removing it when you see it start to turn white and die off.

I have been dosing 1ml/10gal for just over a month now direct into my tank, and seem to be having good results, all I have in my system is SPS, and have not lost one. The only thing lost is the smothering alge that keep growing over frag plugs that were mounted on egg crate.

Believe in the Tech M, but you need to use more. I went through two treatments of it. The first time I raised Mag to around 1800-1850 and it all died away, or so I thought. A month or so later I started to see some more growth of it, so I dosed again and then it was gone for good.

1500 mag will not do the trick you need more
