latazyo's official tank build thread

The only problem I foresee with that choice is, can you fit a 2 inch durso into the overflow? I think that is really overkill for the tank size myself. Glad to do it either way but I still think 1 1/2 is fine.

2" seems a little large for your tank. It's what 35-37 gallons. You would be able to run that mag wide open no doubt. Do you feel flow is an issue in your tank. Is there room for the durso?

Do not get me wrong, I respect the go big or go home policy. Thats why my frag tank is bigger than the main tank, every new item has to be larger than the existing item.

...if I expect everyone in my house to respect those guidelines then I must also

Were the dogs going to put up a fight against this policy?

the dogs and the snake love the go big or go home lifestyle

the wife ignores the policy, as IM sure those of you with spouse's already know they make their own rules

I know it may be overkill, but it fits, so why not?

He doesn't have to go with the Durso.. He could go with the Stockman Stand Pipe .. They both work really well.. But the Stockman works better for smaller places

Should be plenty of room.. I used a 2" to 3" reducer I had to cut the lip out of that to make the reducer able to slip down the 2" pipe. I could not find the piece that would slip.

Edit: I have a small piece of 3" pipe you can have.

Good point Lonnie, I never used those and just didn't even give it a thought. Are those as quiet as the Durso style too?

Sorry Robbie I missed your post!!

They work great!! I have about 3,000 GPH going through mine right now.. They can handle the 3,600 being pushed from my pump with no problem.. I would do more but the teeth on my overflow need to be cut down.

Do a search on them.. you figure the holes are under the other pipe so no Light = no algae that will be growing around the holes.. I cannot remember how many 1/2" holes I put in my pipe under the 3" PVC. The reason I put the egg create above the overflow was to keep big things from being sucked in and blocking the holes.

Also the 3" to 2" reducer is NOT glued to the 2" pipe so I can remove it at any time, and clean the pipe if needed.

nope, I glued the PVC about 3 hours ago, went to sams club, now Im gonna do some homework and fill it up around 7ish

most notably $16.52 for paper towels, $15.88 for toilet paper, meatballs, chicken breasts, chicken cordon bleu, pigs ears, tilapia fillets, the basics

well after a few weeks I am ready to update again

this is a huge update (24 total pics), probably my longest post ever

anyways, on with the update:

so we left off with the need for bracing to take care of the bowing problem I had

Robbie (scbadiver) and I spent a saturday afternoon constructing this thing in his shop and it came out perfectly

newbrace.JPG

it also works perfectly, as you can see the bow is eliminated

nowmorebow2.JPG

I removed all of my livestock and kept it in a 20L with heater and seio for a week without lights and everything is just fine after being in the display for a few weeks now, so the eurobrace project was a 100% success

-------------

while the tank was drained I also decided to go ahead and upgrade my drain to 2", so a new hole was drilled and plumbing installed

here is a mod I had to make to the stand in order to accomodate the giant bulkhead...as you can tell I used a band saw to make the cut, then sanded it down, and then finished the edges with a router

bulkheadfrombelow.JPG

and a shot of the new plumbing underneath (I couldnt believe how huge the 2" union coupling was)

2incoupling.JPG

since there was no room in my overflow for a durso I had to make a stockman...after making the stockman I have to admit that I like the stockman setup better than the durso

here is riser pipe with the holes drilled...I added a few extra holes in case of clog

in order to make everything easily removable I dremelled out the fittings so that they would fit less snug....the 2"->3" coupling that I used needed a stopper to prevent it from sliding all the way down the tube, so I cut off a tiny part of the 2" cap so that it would fit perfectly around the tube and glued it into place....this holds the coupling on perfectly

stockmanpipe.JPG

here are the rest of the parts of the stockman set up...instead of buying 3" PVC only to need about 3 inches of it, I just used a coupling...even though the coupling doesnt fit into the reducing coupling, a little PVC cement holds them together just fine

stockmantopparts.JPG

-------------

since my tank was empty I also decided to rock the meshmod on my euroreef...this mod is extremely easy to do and makes a world of difference

not knowing anything about skimmers I was told to raise my riser tube...well I raised it to far and damn near flooded my room with tank water...the cup

filled up with water in a few minutes and started leaking outside of the system...here is the tube in its "too high" status...you can still see all of the crap in the cup from when it overflowed

risertubetoohigh.JPG

and here is the tube slightly lowered in a "non-flood" status

risertubelowered.JPG

on top of all of those additions I also decided the time had come to add a refugium to the system because I had an extra 20 long lying around

first step was building a stand...I thought it would be funny if the stand I made for the fuge was a mini replica of the main display stand, so that's what I did...here is a shot of the interior of the stand...I can now store all of my stuff inside this stand and nothing will be visible to the public

fugestandinternal.JPG

and here is the finished stand...in my next update I'll provide a good side by side shot to show how similar the stands look

finishedfugestand.JPG

I even filed down the corner of the fuge stand so that it would look like the spot on the main stand that my puppy chewed down

dogchewfugestand.JPG

I also needed to construct a canopy for the fuge...so I bought a bathroom bar at Home Depot for $11 and used spiral compact fluorescents...total cost $30 for lighting

fugelid.JPG

lights on

fugelightson.JPG

since I think HOB overflows are more scary than capo in a bathing suit I needed to drill this tank...I have never drilled a tank before and I didnt feel like ordering a hole saw from Senegal or wherever everyone gets them, so I used the dremel.....I was dismayed when I saw that the diamond dremel bits were 8.99 at home depot, but, undeterred, I went to sears and they had a 2 pack of Craftsman brand diamond bits for $5.99

the only catch was that they are slightly too small for the stock collet in the dremel, so I wrapped the bits with electric tape and it worked fine...so I put the tank in the tub and began my first glass cutting adventure...and wouldnt you know it, it turned out perfectly

holedrilled.JPG

here is proof with bulkhead sticking through

drilledwbulkhead.JPG

during water testing I realized that the fuge's drain was pretty loud...to quiet this beast I would need another stockman, so I fashioned a stockman in a similar manner to the main tank's stockman only on a much smaller scale...it is working quite successfully

the components

fugestockmancomponents.JPG

installed, unassembled

fugedraindisassembled.JPG

and fully assembled and functioning...I also made an eggcrate thing to keep the ball of chaeto away from the drain

fugedrainassembled.JPG

the fuge project caused many additional plumbing headaches to happen based on my not-so-well thoughout plumbing that I originally had, but I had to either make due with what I had or buy another pump, so I chose option 1...the results are as follows

new right side plumbing...even though the water takes this ridiculous path it makes it up to the fuge just fine

rightplumbing.JPG

and here is the left side of the tank...the new fuge drain comes in from behind...I also cleaned up some unused plumbing and it is much more accessable now

than it was before, although this is a major shot to my ego...the plumbing that I removed was the plumbing to my "water changing station" a great idea in

theory, but a poor idea in practice and execution.....maybe next time

leftplumbingbeforeafter.jpg

so after all that bs, here is a new flow diagram for the system

newflow.jpg

and a finished shot of the fuge with my tiny ship wreck sunken chaeto ball...the MJ in the lower left of the tank causes the chaeto to basically sit and spin right where it is in the picture...IM pretty sure that's a good thing

fuge.JPG

---------------

to finally wrap things up............

since I had to remove everything from the tank I also had to re-rockscape it...which as we all know was a major PITA....it never turns out how you want, but there wasnt much else I could do in such a small tank

newrockscape.JPG

and just for fun, here is my new superman...pretty sweet and very colorful...thanks Roy

superman382007.JPG

as usual questions, comments, threats and hate mail are all welcomed

Well since I knwo the ahte mail and threats are welcome I supoose I could stop sending them now.

Everything looks good. I will have to come and see it.

Is the fuge level with the sump? I am confused on that maybe I need more pics.

Roy continues to share the superman wealth with all who want in. The stuff grows surprisingly fast for as much as people pay for it. Mine has at leats doubled in size since I got it from him.

Look good Leighton! Thanks for sharing. I know what you mean about stacking the rocks too. I just got 100lbs from GWA and ended up just laying it in there because I got frustrated. I'll try again later. Keep up the thread sir!

thanks guys

Levi, the fuge is somewhere between the level of the tank and the sump

almost exactly like in the diagram I made

another small update

I added 5 sps frags after stopping by farmer's place last week

I dont have pics of them all (nor do I know the name of any of them, but anyways)

here is one of the large ones

you're all gonna hate me for this, but my parents were in town (reason I couldnt make the swap) and wanted to buy me some fish, so I got 2 fish....so now my tank has....2 fish, after 6 months

yellow watchman (had one before, but too cool to not have this time)
yellowwatchman.JPG

and the coolest fish of all time (no disputes accepted), the longnose hawkfish
longnosehawk.JPG

and just for fun, here is the puppy I bought after inquiring in that thread last week...if you're wondering why I got a girly dog it's because they are my wife's favorite and it was her birthday present

thanks for looking, leave a comment or die
