Leather Coral

I read on here that you should drip acclimate the corals prior to placing them in your tank.

Other than the drip method, should I be doing anything else to these types of corals? (First time coral owner) If I freshwater dip them, how long should they be placed in the FW?

If I stick them in a QT tank, how long can they survive? I do not have coral approved lighting above my QT tank.

What are the rules for prepping leather corals for the DT?

Drip acclimating can be done, usually for corals, i just float them, then add some tank water to the bag as they float then add them to the tank.

as for how long they should live.... for ever as far as your tanks timeline is concerned.

But being that you dont have coral friendly lights, you're just asking for trouble.

you're going to want to get better lights if you want to move into corals

I do have coral friendly lights on my DT. I was referring more to the Qt. What type of lighting (minimum) should be used for the qt tank? I don't wanna spend a lot on a light that won't get used much

How big is your QT tank? Assuming your not going to keep the coral in there long term, (hopefully) something like a 15 watt normal output fluorescent bulb over a 10, maybe a 20 gallon tank should suffice short term. You can also raise the coral up towards the light if need be. GL.

Right now I'm pondering setting up a 10g qt for just the coral. I have a 20g QT set up for just fish.

But as of right now I have a 20g QT that I was gonna use for everything. Only temporary.

What's wrong with a FW dip? For certain corals it's not really the best bet, (LPS, sps) but for softies it's ok IME. When I go to the LFS and buy a zoanthid frag or perhaps a leather I'll run it under the faucet for about 30 seconds or so. No problem. These corals are actually a lot more durable than one might think. GL.

On a side note; I did have an elegance coral one time that was infested with flatworms. A three second dip in FW made them fall off in a hurry. That osmotic shock was just too much.

FWIW I've never QT anything in my life... (go figure) An existance without horror stories just makes the world stop spinning. ;)

If you've got deep pockets though lighting really shouldn't be an issue, especially if you have a club in your area. (NVR) An Angel on your shoulder so to say... GL.

Zoa's are in a world of their own and I really wasn't referring to them. LOL I don't consider zoas a coral but that's me. The world coral to me means something with a skeleton, which leaves out leathers, mushrooms, zoas, platys etc. But again this is by my own definition.

The only thing I dip corals in of any kind is Revive, Bayer, Coral RX and iodine. The only thing from a saltwater reef that I dip in FW is fish, to get rid of flukes.
