Leather's Dying!!!!!

Recnetly my colt coral has started to dissolve and become a brown goo. Today i noticed that my green sinularia has some of its tenticals turning black. I thought this was algae at first, but after trying to remove it i realized it was actually dying and the tentical came off, leaving exposed tissue. The only new thing i have added to the tank is an aquaclear 70 with two bags of chemi-pure and a poly filter in it. The tank is 65gal over 8 months old and is filtered by a 30gal refugium and a bak pak skimmer. All fish and other sps, lps and other softies are fine. My lighting is 4 96watt VHOs. Temp ranges from 78-80 F. I change 10gal of water every other week using oceanic salt. Im going to do another 5gal w/c today and try to suck out the remaing colt. I have two varieties of xenia which are still doing fine, which is normally a sign of good water quality. I also noticed and reported in another thread that i have a small outbreak of planaria, but they seem to be harmless. My question: what can i do other than the water change and just waiting it out? Is there a disease that only effects leathers? Any help would be great. Thanks

Check all your water params first; including a double check on your temperature (just to make sure its not abnormal for some reason). That kind of destruction is almost always related to environmental conditions. Best recommendation is exactly what you said- lots of water changes and suck out the dying corals before the infected tissue has a chance to spread

Thanks for the reply. All parameters are stable, so the water changes begin. How often do you think i should do them? once a week , every other day?

Well, its difficult to over-do water changes; I would probably do one every 2 days or so and see how the tank reacts to it. Once everything settles down, Im a proponent of a small water change weekly, or at least every 2 weeks, but there is a lot of disagreement about the best long term schedule ;)

I agree...I do small changes weekly to biweekly.....I know chemipure and polyfilters didn't do it....I use both of them on all of my systems..... Good luck man.....Cut that tissue off as fast as you can.....Think of it as flesh....Cut back 1/2" or so behind the line of necrosis....Turn your flow up if you can...
