LED Lighting Advise

The lights on my dad's tank went out. He has been wanting to replace them for awhile and i believe the ballast is what is no longer working. (VHO's) He has a 90 gal oceanic reef. He is wanting to upgrade to LED. I suggested he wait to purchase lights until after the CRASE since they would be speaking on LED's. Does anyone have some lights he can buy or borrow to hold his corals over until then or does anyone have any suggestion on what way to go with LED lighting? He is wanting LED only to support his reef. I could only find one avaible to even buy right now that did that.

Thank you for your help!!

More Info: Lights went out Wednesday.

A commercial fixture for tank that size is going to be very expensive. Even a DIY set up is going to be expensive for a 90g reef. DIY will be more cost effective than a commercial fixture but it depends on your ability to solder and work with electronics.

For reference, there is a guy on a small reef forum building a LED set up for his 40 gallon breeder, and right now its estimated to be costing him just shy of $600.

I would also suggest waiting till after CRASE to purchase lights, it is likely there will be some great deals there.

As for the interim, I dont have any spares I could loan you, but will ask around and see if anyone else does- if no one on the forum has any that is.

Paul.

Here are the 3 systems I found. With them being so high, He doesn't want to rush to buy one not knowing which is the best route.

1. Panorama - Out now. Runs about $1,200 for 2 17.5" lights

I will say that LEDs are the best thing we have done to our reef.

Just for show picture at the sandbed, this is our Solaris on a 175 reef that is 36 deep. Corals look amazing and the clam looks great. We have changed out our nano as well to a DIY leds several months ago with same results.

Yes. It is 48" long. For a perm. set up we have to look at somethign around 46" so that it will fit in the canopy

I have an older 250 Mh or a 4'PC that should get you buy. Would be best to get it today as I will be out of town this weekend. I will PM you my cell.
