Hey guys, been a while since i posted anything but i am hoping you guys can help. I was thinking about getting a LED setup for my 90 Gal Bow Reef Tank. I currently have a Current Sunpod 2X 250 MH lighting fixture. Im just tired of listening to the fan and i am sure i can save money on electric if i convert to LED's. I really don't know much about them, can any of you recommend a fairly priced fixture that i can put on my tank. The tank is 48" Long and i need a narrow fixture because the sides of the bow tank is only 13" deep and the depth is about 26". Please let me know if you can recommend either new or used unit that would fit my needs.

What are you keeping in the tank?

Marty

I've don't have one myself but I've been eyeing the Reefbreeders Led for a while, planning on switching out my T5s and trying those at some point. For a value priced LED I don't think you can beat it. Theres a programmable model and one that has manual dimming on it. I think a 2 yr warranty as well. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles or a sleek a look as the more expensive models, but I doubt our corals/fish really care about any of that anyway!

Take a look @ Build My LED.com.
Slim fixtures like a flourescent bulb, various configurations, good reviews and reasonable.

I currently have mostly softies but i don't want to limit my lighting since i would like to put other corals in at some point.

currently i am running an opened top because of the tightness of the Sunpod Light fixture i have had up for a few years. I would love to get the canopy back on since the paint on the wall behind my overflow was eaten away by the salt.

you should run the LEDs a good amount above the tank say 14" over the water. it gives the light a chance to spread more evenly and you avoid the "disco ball effect". keeping the canopy off would probably be the best option for this.

with LED Fixutures being on the lighter side i could probably mount it at the top of my canopy which would give me about 12 inches or so above the water level. More importantly is finding the right LED's. I know nothing about them and from what i do know is that a potential problem with LED's is spectrum not reaching the bottom of the tank and being more of a downward direction. I would love more input on specific fixtures that some of you may have great success with. I thank everyone for the sites and fixtures posted already.

LED's- Build My Led

I own two fixtures from Build My LED.
I absolutely love the way they are made.
They're tough, compact, use no fan for cooling.
I'm not one for lots of glitz and glitter on my equipment-
I just want well designed, long lasting gear.
I can't say enough about the intelligent design of these lights.
The power module/ inverter is not inside the light bar- if it goes bad, you just call the company and get a new one sent.
The fixture can be mounted right on the tank, you choose the beam angle you want based on the size, depth of your tank.
The units are built in the US by US workers.
The warranty on these lights is three years, and you can speak to the one of the company owners if you wish when you call for help.
The company web site has an OUTSTANDING explanation of how light is actually measured and will help you make sense of it all.
Good Luck,
Brian

I have AI sol blue and just wish it has more colors like red, green,uv etc..but it's all good :)

I would suggest you to check out AI "52" LEDs.

its amazing how many different opinions you get with lighting. if youre going with an open top, then kessils are pretty popular. the ocean revive arctic t247 is a more budget friendly led with good reviews, or ai 52s and radions if youre looking to spend some loot.

With most of the controllable fixtures, you need to calculate more room from the top of the canopy and mounting. Also a way to mount them like maybe a DIY rail system because most if not all will have their fan exhaust on the top of the unit, ie: AI, Reefbreeders. One decent light that is thin and exhaust on the bottom of the unit (blowing down) is the Radions so this might work best in your situation.

I can second all of the above. I have two over my tank that supplement Kessils, which I feel are excellent as primary lights.

I tried GHL, which are also excellent, but didn't want to mess with all of the variables. The less I can mess with the better :) So that also eliminated Radions for me.
