LED lighting

What does anyone know about using LED lighting as your primary lighting for say a 72 gallon tank? Do they work like the ads I've seen say? How many would you need? Anyone out there have experience with them?

Seems like a cheaper way to go if they work.

24 gallon nano with 150 w MH (day 5 and all is well). Hoping to upgrade to a 72 gallon that I have to reseal.

Not sure about cheaper initially. Scott is getting some experience, I think. Others of us have a little experience on smaller tanks. Someone will chime in here soon.

I have LEDs on my 34g and love them, they will go on my 75g when it's done cycling. They give the shimmer that halides do without the heat. Corals have all responded well to them, after the initial shock they got because I forgot to slowly acclimate them to it. Don't know long term how they'll work out, but so far I'm pleased.

I just wish there was a cheaper option to buy the LED's themselves...and then we could easily make the fixtures and other electronics.

If you have any questions, give me a yell. I am researching the stuff now and have a bunch of parts at home to make one for my 24G cube. I'll be assembling them shortly.

I could make a killer light fixture at my house with a $15 driver and three or for XP-G 3W LEDs at $6.50 each. :) If it was recessed or indirect, there is no end to what you could do with the things.
