LED lights

Looks really cool, and I need lights - but triple the cost of a 3x250 MH setup.... Hmm, probably not. :-\

i dont need them they have been out for over a month

for the price i can get a few lighting systems and still be able to buy something else

You could put together a whole system for that much. At least one that would fit under that light.

A few notes from their ad:

The current design produces PAR light output levels equal to a 250W MH 20K.
The Solaris reads 178 PAR vs 133 PAR for the 250W Radium Bulb.

Comments:

1- Try lighting a 6' tank with only 1 250w mh.

2- Try finding a PAR of only 133 for a mh (as they claim) on this page: http://www.cnidarianreef.com/lamps.cfm In fact, try finding one even at what they say that light puts out INCLUDING any radium/ballast combination.

3-Sounds like an expensive light for a softy tank.

The Chineese will knock it off with in a few years.

The PARs should get better and the prices will fall. Could be the light of the future and less expensive to operate.

Didn't BMW have LED tail lights, now all the major mfg do and it's trickling down to their economy cars.

I'll bet in 3-5 years they will be the same $$$ as MH.

I thought LED bulbs cost like pennies or seems like they are really cheap. Is the cost associated with research and development?

Like someone else said before wait a couple years I see this price dropping and them being very useful. I know many people in nano and pico forums have been researching and using LED lights for some time. With pretty good success. This is just a grander scale. And we all know bigger is better.

I'm not saying it can't be done for a larger tank, but lighting a very shollow nano versus a deep larger tank are two different things. The nanos that have used LED's pretty much have them packed in there, there's only so much realesate available. So you'll need more bulbs than what you can fit to get enough light way down in the tank.

But i do think given time it will catch on... or maybe it will just be a good alternative for the smaller tank market instead of the big tank market.
