LED moonlight benefits?

My Hamilton Deluxe hood has blue LED lights. Is the moonlight just for looks? I have not added any corals yet. So far I have 5 chromis and 3 clowns, and a small CUC of snails and hermits and shrimp. I don't really like the look of these moonlights. So is there any reason to turn the lights on at night? Or are they just for mood?

Bigd,

If and when you add corals like zoanthids or palys you will love the moonlights if they are the blue led lights. They really make the colors in some of the corals pop. I personally do not know if there is truly a benefit to having them, but when mine are on I find myself in front of my tank more often.

So does the blue light make certain corals like the zoo's show fluorescence? I could see how that would look much better than just sand and LR at night. I probably will choose some zoanthid for my first coral addition. Maybe then I will want to turn on the blue leds.

Thanks jawdubb

Artificial moonlights have been correlated to everything from breeding events to disease recovery. IMO, the only thing moonlights have a definite correlation to is allowing you to see your tank's inhabitants at night (unless of course you're blind) without disturbing them - which can be very useful. I had them on a lighting fixture awhile back, and I would just leave them plugged in 24/7. You can't see them during the day, and then you don't have to bother turning them on and off at night or bother buying yet another timer (plus LEDs only use a couple watts per diode, so it's not a huge energy cost).
