Lensbaby for Me

Hmmnn, you'd think that was some sort of strange expression. But a Lensbaby is actually a funny little and relatively inexpensive lens you can get for a SLR camera. A lensbaby is a selective focus lens.

From the website:
Lensbabies bring one area of your photo into sharp focus, with that "sweet spot" surrounded by graduated blur. You can move the sweet spot to any part of your photo by bending the flexible lens tubing.
For a creative artsy photographer like me, these lenses are FREAKING COOL! So I got one the other day and having been playing with it. Here are some pics that I have taken of my 55g tank at home.

You can click on the images to go to the pic on the flickr site where you can click on all sizes to see bigger versions....

I am using a Nikon D50 with the lens mentioned above. I will bring the camera and lens to the meeting next week for anyone who wants to take a look and/or give it a try.

ok. Those pics are awesome. You are not allowed to enter into the POTM contest. You'd win every time.

Paul,

What kind of macro lens do you use on that D50?

I just got one and want a decent z00m/macro lens

Nikon D50s rock for being such an amazing DSLR camera for such a great price. Of course, now I lust over my friends D80. But that's ok. Maybe I'll actually think about upgrading when they release a 16 MP (or so) camera. That'd probably be enough of a step up to make it worth my wife. I'd LOVE the 24-30 MP range, but that's going to be a while. 30 MP is considered to be roughly equivelent to film. Woot!

And as for macro lens, I have a three part anwer to that.

First, a got a macro adapter set about a month ago to mount on the front of the18-55mm kit lens. They are mentioned in my 47g tank log thread in this post. They are basically single lens filters that you screw onto the front of your regular lens. They reduce the focal length of your lens so that you can focus closer in. The kit came with a total of four (+1, +2, +4, +10 diopter filters) and can be stacked on top of each other. They work really well, especially for about $25.

Second, the pics above were taken with a device called a Lensbaby 2.0. It is a "selective focus" lens that creates images, like those above, which have a "sweet spot" that is in focus. The rest of the image will blurs outward from that point. The kit came with the ability to shoot in aperatures of 2, 2.8, 5, 5.6, and 8. Now, to get good MACRO shots, you'll want to add on the macro adapter kit for the Lensbaby. It works the same was as the kit that I have for my 18-55mm lens. And then the wide-angle lens add-on is also good for increasing your field of view, for taking macro shots. All those accessories can be found on the lensbaby website, here. Btw, don't buy a lensbaby from amazon. They have serious shipping delays with this item and the accessories.

Third, someday I would like to own a REAL macro lens for my D50. The lens currently on my wishlist on Amazon.com is the "Tamron SP Autofocus 90mm f/2.8 DI 1:1 Macro Lens for Nikon DSLR Cameras". This isn't very high up on my priority list, however, as there are SO MANY things I can do with my current lens.

And lastly, off topic, my dream lens is the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens. This lens would be the perfect "walking around" lens. It is normally $700 or so, but has gone up recently (undoubtably due to demand). Amazon now has it listed for $999. Holy crap, won't be getting that anytime soon. :)

Hope I answered your question somewhere in there...
