I'm heartbroken. This is the blue star wrasse that was flipping out in QT last week, so I put her in the DT. I hadn't seen her since, but yesterday morning my boyfriend caught sight of her. She was out but lying on her side -- he said she didn't look great, but she was definitely alive.
Came home yesterday and looked all over the tank in hopes of spotting her, but no wrasse. Went to let my dog out a few hours later and found her lying on the floor in the sunroom. Now, I know my dog carried her in there (the teeth marks and fur were a giveaway), but he can't get into the tank (it's a 16" tank on a 42" stand) so I'm sure he picked her up off the floor. That's the easy mystery to solve.
Tougher mystery is how she got out. Tank is rimless, but has a cover made out of an aluminum frame and 1/4" BRS mesh. There's no way she got through the mesh, but she might have slipped right up the front between the screen and tank where the tank bows out a bit. Or the really tiny slit by the return line. Or she might have hit the top so hard she bumped the whole cover up. It was in place that evening, so no clues there. I'm trying to troubleshoot because I don't want to ever loose a fish that way again, and I really thought the cover was adequately secure.
This fish did strange things, like flip along the top of the tank, and did not seem completely well, so perhaps it was a fluke. I'm going to try and reinforce the top though. I was all set to deal with loosing this wrasse, but not that way...
