My name is Dave and I'm from Buffalo NY. My dad recently (3-4 years ago) moved to Pittsburgh. He finally bought a house there and is looking to start up a tank. So I have a few questions for you guys being that I don't live there I don't know the market there too well but look forward to knowing people here as well. .

Side note: my dad is not on here which is why I'm doing this post but I'm hoping to get him on here soon.

So now onto the questions.
The first question I have which may be an obvious one, what are the good local reef shops there?
Secondly anyone selling any tanks or full blown set ups? I'm not quite sure exactly what size he is looking for but I'm trying to get him into at least a 90 or 120.

Thanks in advance for any responses and I hope I didn't offend anyone here I was trying to sneak into your reef club or anything

Do you know approximate where at in the city?

Wet Pets is decent in the south
Elmer's in the east
Seahorse in the north
Aqua World in the West - but closer to the city

I'm not exactly sure where. I think he's just on the outskirts of the city though. He won't mind traveling a little to go to a store.

i'm a big fan of Oddball in Baldwin. great shop, friendly/knowledgeable staff, and good prices.

if you're going to shop at wet pets, i would advise checking prices online first. they tend to charge a 20% - 50% premium on most dry goods in their store. fine if you know your prices, but they will gladly take a n00b for as much money as they can.

similar experience at Elmer's. they sold me loads of crap i didn't need. so i would advise making a list of the equipment beforehand, knowing what you want, and not letting them railroad you. their dry goods selection is pretty poor on anything but foods anyways.

i don't have a full setup spare, but i do have extra odds and ends laying around that i'm looking to get rid of.

2 EcoRay 60D LED light fixtures, which would be good on a 4ft FOWLR tank. $250 for both units.

i also have a spare ~160 gallon Oceanic tank, stand, and hood sitting in the basement. $1000 for tank/stand/hood/return pump(forget which kind, would have to look). front starphire. it's a 6' long tank, predrilled, so it is a biggun. unfortunately i don't have room upstairs for it because my girlfriend thinks we need furniture. :P

other than that i have a fluval 406 canister filter for $125, but he probably won't need that for a reef tank.

i also have a 40w Aqua Violet UV sterilizer for $125. needs a new bulb but the sleeve is in tact. probably wouldn't need that for a reef either though.

more than happy to talk deals for multiple items if you (or anyone else) is interested, and i have plenty of pictures if required.

for the tank he would have to be able to move it, i have a bum shoulder and no truck so it is tough for me to move it around.

-edit-

after reading my list, i guess i do kind of have a spare setup. ha.

I have a 90 gallon set-up I am trying to sell...

90 gallon tank reef ready with overflow and plumbing
29 gallon sump partitioned with a refugium
vertex 180 skimmer
custom oak stand AND canopy

I have Lights (2 ecoray 60D) that I would be willing to sell once I get new lights. I upgraded to a 220 and 2 don't cut it!

Let me know if interested. I live in Washington PA

That sounds like a solid set up. I'll let him know. What are you looking to get $$$ wise not including lights?

understood. ;)

feel free to let me know if there's anything else on the list you guys want.

glad you're getting him in to the hobby!

Well he had tanks before but after moving around he never really had time or especially space for one. Now he's finally got that so it'll be nice to get one going again.

It would be great if both you and your father stopped by a club meeting (usually the 3rd Saturday of each month) at the Comfort Inn in Monroeville.

For more information, you can visit pmasi.org and/or post back here.

We have a meeting coming up March 15th at 6:00 PM where we will be discussing plumbing for tanks, sumps, skimmers, etc.

There will be plenty of folks to talk to and plenty of opinions regarding the local stores and where to shop. You may want to hold off on buying anything until you visit a meeting and get a better idea of how to best move forward.

10-15 of us usually stop for something to eat and drink after the meetings. You are also welcome to tag along.

Welcome to Pittsburgh!

I'll talk to him about that. Thanks very much.

Just a heads up...

Even though this is a club forum, the mods still enforce the buying/selling rules at RC.
