Let there be LIGHT!

Guess what showed up on my door step today? Yep, you guessed it, my new LIGHTS. Nova Extreme 4x54 T5HO with 2x10K and 2XActinic (460nm).

BAD: It is never good when you pick up the box and hear what sound like marbles clinking inside the box. Sure enough, I opened the box to find a bulb in LOTS of pieces.

GOOD: I immediately called Drs Foster & Smith customer service and was asked to inspect the fixture for visible damage first, then check the remaining bulbs to determine if the problem is isolalated to the bulb or not.

BETTER: I followed the directions of the customer service person and determined that only 1 bulb was bad (duh, it was shattered!) and the remaining fixture and all moonlights lit on queue.

BEST: I called customer service back to follow up on the bulb issue and they immediately took an order to replace the bulb. The customer service person even said she would send 2 bulbs in case one breaks in shipment (bonus) and even offered to pay for overnight FedEx to have it delivered tomorrow, which I greatly appreciated but declined. Heck, I've been running 30W over my tank for a year, another week of less than full strenght is not going to cause any damage.

I LOVE MY TANK! Ted, the orange cap & Pocillo is fluorescing trememdously. Steve, the birds nest has incredible PE and all of the zoo's and shrooms you have fragged are giving GREAT color. I have a renewed level of gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the life and colors within my little biome :)

With the order, I also purchased a refractometer. Directions (can't believe I actually read them first, LOL) says to calibrate with distilled water. Where can one find distilled water or make distilled water? My RO produces 4 tds so I am not sure I should just use my RO water for calibration. Help please...

I think 4 tds would be good to calibrate. it takes way more than that to raise salt levels noticeably. I might try distilled water the first time then your ro against it. I think it will be so close you won't notice a difference. you should actually check calibration everytime you use it just to make sure it hasn't been bumped. I check mine maybe once a month though and it appears to be close everytime.
glad you made it over to t5's hope you like them as much as I do.

John,

Following up with what Rob said as to checking calibration. I check mine everytime I use it and it seems like every 4th or 5th time I check it, it needs tweaked just a bit. I just use the distilled water you buy at the grocery store to calibrate it.

Pics??? that would assume I own a camera, LOL. I'm thinking I will volunteer hosting the next meeting (August) so all can see in person. Maybe someone could bring a camera and take pics for me.

I'll bring my camera John. Really you should pick up a digital camera for recording your kids - both human and fishy - as they grow and change.

I met with Jami last week and she is a very nice person. Thanks for the contact info. Haven't been able to get ahold of Dustin yet, but I will : )
