Let's be honest- Starfish

Well, as most know, there are VERY few starfish that are cool that are not predators and come out during the day. I know there are a ton of very cool ones out there and I know there are people out there that have gotten them against all advice. Let's hear some feedback. I know you have them. Quit lying. Have you had problem?

I don't have one, Nor will I ever own one. I don't enjoy placing something in my tank that I know will surely die. It's like a death sentence. The only Starfish that I know has ever survived was one that darksilent had. A chocolate chip. IMHO no one should buy them, they all die very very very slowly. And in this hobby we should be a lot more responsible. I think letmegrow would know more than I do on the topic. Why don't you ask him. Again, this is JMHO. To me it's no diffrent that what your signature says.

Stupidsreef.

I hear ya stupid. I'm with steve. We talk about this all the time. I was just curious. Just curious if anyone has been successful. I just stick with serpant and brittle

I have a serpent that is about 10" you can have if I can get him out. lol I believe he has a cherub angel, a firefish and a cardinal to his death list. He hasn't eaten anything since the cherub about a year ago. He is very crafty and prefers to hide his body on the roof of the many little caves I have and drops down on the fish. I have seen him try this but never actually seen him catch anything. I also believe he is the death of my various expensive danged shrimp over the years.

Geez. Sounds like a good deal

I don't think it would be a good fit. My nurse shark likes serpent :D

I have had him for 3 years now...he was one of my first purchases. It is fun to watch him in the tank though, he always stays just out of my reach.

i've had a green brittle starfish and striped serpent for a year, and a black brittle for six months, and the only linkia that will live in my tank and not sure what they eat but will live is a yellow linkia that only nemo pets in pontoon carries.

i have one of yellow linkia in 29 gallon and one in my 125 no losing limbs or nothing not sure what they eat can't find info on the internet about them.

blue linkia just melt away limb by limb can't keep em, but atleast the yellow ones i got from nemo's do great cause i really like starfish.

I have had success with serpents, fromia (specifically Fromia monilis), and a slate blue (blueish-gray) linckia. I have tried my hand at the Linckia multiflora but haven't kept them past one year. My fromia survived for 5 years and I still have my slate blue linckia and serpents - all going on 8 years now. I find the biggest key in keeping them is having trace to no phosphates, temperature below 80 degrees F and doing a very very very slow acclimation for a minimum of 4 hours. The biggest problem I see is people saying "wow cool" and not either being informed of the difficulty in keeping them or not doing their research. I agree they are incredibly challenging and for the most part would be better off left on the reef.

I had a orange linkia for over one year in my old setup and sold him with the rest of my livestock when I had to move here. He was doing perfect. Now I have a chocolate chip thats been w/ me over a year w/ no problem. I don't really like the chocolate chip but atleast he's alive!

anyone know anything about a red bali star, I hear that they stay about 2" in length? sorry for stealing your thread reggae! but im curious if anyone has exp. with this little guy and knows where to get him? sorry again reggae, but you guys told me to ask questions !! :)

I have a chocolate chip star, but NOT IN MY REEF TANK, IT'S NOT REEF SAFE!!!!

If you have a fish only, it's your guy(gal?). If not, avoid stars all together. I had a serpent star that ate whatever fish it could catch, although I was told it was "reef safe".

phil, lol Im not talking for now lol I would wait several months lol my tank is hardly started, I was just doing research on it so I wouldnt have to do as much later on.... :) but thanks for your opinion! :) and check your phones voice mail! lol :) cya tomorrow(if you get back to me lol!) sorry reggae!

I have had a brittle and serpent for about 10 months with no issues. I did have a 3rd that died.

Don't think you're stealing the thread. Good to ask questions. I've asked more questions than you can imagine. I figure if people want to answer them, they will. If not, they won't

Ask away:D

i have a bunch of these little 6-8 legged ones in my nano. they arent big at all...biggest is maybe nickel sized. they are just showing up time to time, i think something has been eating them cause they never have all their legs or full parts of their legs

I am only refering to the linckia's. Most of the brittle star's will do just fine. The little tiny sandsifters are a great addition to your sand bed. I've have several Brittle stars and never had an issue with one of them. (I stray away from the big hairy green one's)

It seem some of you have had success with the linckia's. I congrat you on such it is reefer's like you who find way to sustain things that are hard to keep. Maybe one day through your efforts we may all be able to learn how to obtain them. I know everyone told me NOT to buy a clam under 2 inches, I finaly did, and he's still alive and doing great. Although I've done varouis task that I researched to get to this outcome. For now I will leave the linckia's to other's though. 1 thing at a time for me.
