Lets see those kalk dosed sps tanks!

Hey guys, I'm staring a new build and I'd like some input. My tank will be mostly sps. I currently have two sps dominated systems and have tried both kalk and 2 part dosing. In ny new setup I will try and use kalk as one of my primary methods to maintain my Ca.Kh levels. I'm sure kalk will keep my dkh inline (8-9) but to bring my calcium up I will be using randy's recipe dispensed through a BRS dosing pump. I would like to hear your experiences and possibly see some of the kalk sps tanks!

You can add white vinegar to your kalk solution to increase the amount of calcium that is held in the water (the kalk solution not the tank water). Also, the vinegar does lower the Ph of the kalk solution, so keep this in mind if you use kalk to maintain Ph. One other benefit to using vinegar is it supplies your tank with a form of organic carbon for nitrifying bacteria to feed on.

An observation... I've noticed that just adding vinegar to your topoff with kalk is not sufficient to control nitrates. I added a fan over my sump to increase evaporation and increase the amount of vinegar added to the system. Now... Is adding a fan the right way to go? It depends on the approach of the reefer. A fan will cause your heater to run more and will add more humidity to the air in the surrounding area. More information can be found in "The Reef Aquarium: III" Sprung and Delbeek.

Warmest Regards,
James
