I'm looking for alternative ways to hang the black box lifting fixtures.

Post up some pictures and a description of what you used to make a hanging kit for your lifting fixtures

I hanging kits that come with them all and a hook? :p

I think hanging is u-g-l-y..
I took some aluminum angle and just made a mount kit so mine sits on top of the open canopy.. Just 4 pieces and some rivets and done.. Essentially a pocket that they fit into
Sorry don't have pics and don't have it setup anymore.. But I'm doing the same with my ATI t5 fixture too as I don't like the look of hanging lights..

Many use "shelf brackets" sticking out from the wall or aluminum extrusion or conduit or pvc pipe or whatever you've got..

Google images search for this "aquarium light hanging bracket" gives you TONS of pictures to look at for inspiration..

Yeah I have two brackets but the beams in the wall aren't centered between my tank setup so it will look awful if I go the shelf bracket route.

I also don't know if I trust drilling it into the ceiling directly

As to the walls/studs.... So what.. Use appropriate drywall anchors where there is no stud and center them..
Or as far as the ceiling.. So what.. same..

These are my go to style..
