Been Reefin'
Hey everyone I am in the clam buying mood, and want to start with finally getting a gigas after wanting one for 4 years. I know they need to be in a big tank, but the 75g will do until I upgrade within the next year or so. ATM I have a blue spot squamy I grew from about 3-6" and a new blue rim derasa (about 2 months ago).

LETS SEE THOSE BIG BOYS!!!

its not really colorful, its at 19" in length now, this pic was taken several months ago at 17".
I have 3 others but they are little guys at around 5-9"
I'd love to see one of the yellow versions in a tank.

Proudmom, your squammy is very nicely colored, how long have you had it? and what lighting do you use. any special feeding?

Beautiful clams!

I wish I took a recent picture of my Gigas. Shell length was about 23-24 inches last month when I gave him to my friend stocking a 400 gallon tank. I think Gigas clams are the prettiest of all. They are very elegant.

Word of wisdom, my 2 cents, etc. Clams the size of mine can spit out a LOT of water, ruining lights and electronics or tripping GFIs. They also need a TON of calcium when they get larger than 12 inches.

Wow that would have been a nice one too see Outerbank. Did you ruin anything when he spit the water or just letting us know it could happen?

yeah I can keep up the calcium up now that I have a large reactor, I was dosing 2 part at a rate of 1 gallons each part per week, couldnt keep the calc. higher than 300 ppm. thats with 12 clams, the biggest is approaching 20" and yes the shell is so thick i now see where the calcium all goes.

KPK, the clam ruined a tunze controller. It also blew out 3 bulbs in about 3 weeks. I finally decided to put some glass over the clam (he was only about 5 inches below the surface). However, he would spit so strong that the water would splash outwards from the glass and still spill over some. I am not sure if the spitting would matter on the bottom of a 30 inch tall aquarium, but I am sure it could still ripple the water surface some from that death.

I also had a very large derasa in the tank and it could spit pretty darn good itself.

I moved to Tyler Texas a month ago and had to give so much of my tank away. That was hard to do, especially after I now see how much I had in the tank. Luckily, the clams are now in a 400 gallon tank and aparently doing well.

Reefkoi, a gigas in a 600 gallon tank--wow!! That must be awesome.

thanks, i love clams if I could have a tank full of them i will. My next clam will be the black/white maxima.

cool well you are doing a good job keeping clams it looks like. I am working on a tank full of clams myself, i am up to 14 and am always adding. The black/white maxi would be cool, i always find croceas locally but not many maxis, someday.........
