Let's see your Tridacna Gigas!!!

nice, that one has a ton of blue spots! Cool! What size was it when you bought it? and how long did it take to grow to this size?

Its was about 7-8 inches 3 years ago when I got it. The spots really show with the xm 20k bulbs. When I use 14k hamiltons they don't show very well.

Here's a picture of it a couple months after I got it.

ahh i see, yeah I have 14K's and thats why I dont see my spots as much as yours. Well thats cool that its been doing good for 3 years, I wonder what size they will ultimately get? I have a Gigas thats 3 years old at almost 20" shell length, I wonder if it will hit 36" in another couple years, that will be an impressive sight for sure. I have never seen a 3 foot clam in a personal tank, here or in person, I wonder if they exist?

what do you do about transporting them to new tanks etc. I know they get very heavy are they good travelers?

ive been looking for one for quite a while but havent really found one a I like, it would be going in a 120, im also getting a 4 incher or so, so I will have time to upgrade etc.

what do you guys think.

I just picked up my first gigas last night, the thing is awesome and has some nice green/blue spots.

When I moved mine to its new tank last year. I just used heavy duty trash bags, that put it in them while underwater and lifted it out and in to it's new tank. I read somewhere that's it's bad for them to come in contact with air. They can't completly seal themself like other types of clams

Here's a picture under my new 14k's not much different in color.
I wonder if ours come from different regions. Ours are about the same size, but I noticed yours has large raised bumps and mine has none.

well I think I can see the bumps on yours, which I think are an eye of sorts, I think mine is the same, yours just looks a little wider spread. when i bought my clam it was opened wide like yours, it was under 175 watts at 20K
Now my tank has 250 watts D.E. 14k so this could be why its not opened as wide and may have something to do with the eyes not raised as much, I think it has to do with the lighting more than where it came from. Mine is pretty much right under a bulb at a depth of 30"
