LF beginner coral in the East Valley

Hey all,
This site has been a great source of information for me and my son as we started our first tank. We are about 2 months in now and have a cycled tank; although we had a little battle with Nitrates after using the local water and ice (without testing it...oops). We are sitting with a clean up crew (blue leg hermits, scarlett hermits, Nassarius Snails, Trochus snails) and brittle start and two clowns (the kids love the clowns). We are looking to get started with some corals. We are thinking some Xenia, Toadstool mushroom (for the Clowns) and not sure what else to start with. We are trying to avoid spending a ton of money on the coral while we learn how to care for it.

We are in the South East Valley (border of Queen Creek and Gilbert) Do you guys have any suggestions on where we should go, the LFS's seem to be a little over priced for some? Also any caution or warnings or suggestions about which corals to start with and our list would be greatly appreciated.
 
Personally I would avoid Xenia and Kenya trees. It was a nightmare for me to get rid of them. They just grow to fast

They are cool until you start building more confidence on what you are doing and what to move to other corals.. Not too easy to get rid of once your system is established cause they will grow super crazy!!!

I have a 46 Gallon Bowfront (16Dx21Tx36W) with a single current USA Orbit Marine LED, AquaMAX HOB Skimmer, CPR HOB Refugium, about 80lbs of Live Rock, 50 LBs Live Sand.

I like the way you put that Dre59, I spoke to Aiden and we looked at a few different pictures and walked him through the challenges. We both agree, we will shy away from them both for now.

I found good thread on Live Aquaria that had a good list of beginner corals. We are now looking at Frog Spawn, Toadstool Leather, Hammer Corals and Sun Corals. I just sent my son off to do more research.

Any insights on these? Is anyone in the East Valley selling any of these?

Very good choices Frog Spawn, Toadstool Leather, Hammer!! Look into zoas and palys also.. Just don't go crazy with them cause you will get hooked..lol
 
So does anyone on the East Side (I am in South Gilbert at Power and Queen Creek) have any Hammer Coral, Frogspawn, Toadstool leather, Zoa's or Palys they are looking to sale?

Pictures and cost would be awesome.
 
Best bet you to come to this month club meeting people selling some frags of most of commons looking for price $5 to $20
 
This being your first corals, get into the habbit of dipping every coral you get before putting it in your tank. You don't want to introduce any pest and a simple dip in bayer or revive prevents a lot.

Good advice, I will swing by the LFS to grab a coral dip. Are there instructions on the dip? How long do I dip it for? I assume I will need to blow it off some how (with a baster) to get any of the bad stuff off?

I've been using bayer insecticide from Home Depot for the past couple years. I do 5mls, per 1 cup (you can do more water if you need to, just stick to the 5ml to 1c ratio) of tank water for 15 minutes and baste every couple minutes. After 15 minutes I put the corals in another container with about twice the tank water as my dip solution to rinse the corals. I leave them in the rinsing water for about 5 minutes, pour the water out and corals go into my tank. No matter who you get corals from always dip, I made the mistake of trusting a seller and now I'm in the middle of a pest (AEFW) war.
 
I live on Ellsworth and queen creek rd and would be happy to sale you some frags. I have frogspawn, kryptonite candy canes and a few others. Here is a quick pick of the frogspawn:

 
not to hijack, but I wouldn't mind buying few heads of frogspawn.

as for easy corals, I have some Wammin Watermellon zoanthids about 20 Polyps. $15 its yours. I am in San Tan Valley, few miles further south from Rippinfrags
