Does anyone have any mangroves i could buy from. Need these to help remove phosphates! And also trying to grow them out when bigger!

Thanks!

someone once told me mangroves are not very efficient at removing phosphates..might want to look into Chaetomorpha, Shaving Brush Plant (Penicillus sp.) or some other type of macro algae

o ok...well id still like some to grow to make the tank look good around the outside haha but thanks for the heads up on that i didnt know!!

Check on ebay. I've gotten some from someone in hawaii for like $10 for 15 mangroves. they were just the pods/sead things with no leafs but they grew pretty quick.

wow, when i was in FL i brought back like 50 of those things, and grew a whole bunch for awhile. i shouldve sold them MAN

Mangroves (in large numbers for aquarium purposes) are known to remove nitrates; I don't believe they have any sort of effect on PO4.

Regardless, they do (as you say) look neat. Be warned; they export salt through their leaves and require frequent spraying of freshwater to prevent them from dropping the leaves and eventually dying.

Doing water changes, running phosban or ferric oxide, gravel vacuuming and a good protein skimmer are much more efficient ways of controlling nutrient levels. JMO

They will use po4 (like all algae, even zooxanthellae) to grow.

But a phosphate remover such as gfo is more effective.

Technically, your right, but enough to have a recordable effect on the level of PO4 in a 75G aquarium, especially in small numbers? I highly doubt it.

I bought mine on ebay. They came fast and they grow well under 50/50 CF bulbs about 10 inches away. Put them on acrylic rods and fasten them with zip ties so the top is an inch out of the water. They will be suspended in the water and the roots will slowly make their way to the sand. Spray them with R/O water once a day to simulate rain.

I've not seen anything local below $5 for even unrooted shoots / pods. The leaved out, rooted are running $25 on-line. Any links to the Hawaii varieties?

My understanding is the only real potential value is their ability to export heavy metals. Copper, lead, tin, etc. Let's not discount the value associated with being able to say "I have a tree that's growing in saltwater!

Just go on ebay and search for mangroves. For $20.00 it is worth it, if you want them. I do think it is cool to have them filtering the water. They will just be the stem and you will grow it out from there.

I know reefcleaners have them and they got $5 shipping and 10% off. I have ordered from them before and love everything I have got.
