LF: Time-Laps tips

I am looking for some ideas on how to setup a time-laps sequence of photos of my tank. I guess I should say that I'm not sure "time-laps" is the correct term for what I want to accomplish, so let me explain my end goal.

I would like a "time-laps" movie of a year of my tank in photos. Similar to the guy who took a photo of himself every day for like 12 years...

What I want to do is take a photo of my setup every week and blend the results into a movie 52 photos from now.. and on going after that. To make the "movie" work visually the camera would need to be in the exact same place for each and every photo.

I'm willing to leave a tripod setup with a camera for ever, but my wife is not.

There in lies the problem, or the area to which I am seeking some tips.

How can I get the camera setup in exact the same spot for each of the photo sessions?

I assume some "TAPE" on the floor hidden under the carpet could work, or possibly some "string" could be used to get x,y positions of the camera...

Thoughts?

Time Lapse, with an E :) If you're timing laps, you're watching someone run around a track or swim in a pool ;)

I did this in my cubicle with a plant at work and didnt want to keep my camera at work for a year, so what I did was build a small wooden piece that directly fit the base of my camera. I built it out of 2 x 2s and just nailed them down to a small piece of plywood. Basically I put my camera onto a piece of plywood and used a marker to mark where the 2x2s needed to go to hold it in place, I cut them out and put them down without glue. Then I squished them all in tightly on the camera to make sure it would hold it perfectly in the same spot every time, then I hooked them down.

Then all I had to do was glue (dont tell the mainenance guy at my office I did this) the brace to my shelf in the position I wanted and set the camera in it every morning and take a picture.

Sadly, after about 4 days of doing this I stopped :) But the process would work for you, if you can find a spot you and your wife can agree on for a small wooden frame to stay for a year. Keep in mind it doesnt have to be in the middle of the room, it can be off to the side.
