Hey all...
I have lived in miami all my life. I must have visited 95 % of all LFS in the Dade/Broward area. I have yet to see much livestock that impresses me. Im a big fan of tangs and anthias. Other than yellow, hippos, purples, blondes, scopas and very small tangs which take forever to get where you want. No Black tangs, adult Vlamingi, Gem tangs, rare sohal, adult orangeshoulder ect.. Does anyone know a particular LFS that can REALLY, not just say yea, yea, yea get any of these fish.
I dont wanna go the internet way.. but might have to.

I have not come across any LFS that has actually come through a fish special order, I hear Exotic aquatic special orders for you but dunno if they are any more reliable than you have experienced.
The only place were often see show size & semi to rare fishes is Big Al's, but, you will need to just go there each time they get a delivery to check it out, or maybe stablish a relationship with the fish manager and ask them to call you when they get what you need.

I agree, I have seen more rare fish at Big Als than anywhere else. I have never seen anything on caliber with a Gem tang anywhere though. I have heard chatter around town that people can get them...but never seen one.

Atlantis Aquariums claim to special order certain fish, but say they cant assure me of a quality specimen, its pritty much it is what it is ! Any info. on live aquaria and makin waves?? These two have a great selection and am considering purchasing from there?

If you are willing to get your fish online then call the marine center up. They can and will get many of the fish you mentioned.

Live aquaria is the way to go when money is not an object, they are more expensive than most online retailers but have a 14 day guarantee that you cannot beat, they do have the rare an exotics check their "divers den" and also "collectors corner"
I believe one of them updates twice a week, give them a call to find out their stock before they even post in the internet

I've never seen gem tangs and such on their site though, am I looking in the wrong places on their site?

Chris, there were two gem tangs about 1.5 month ago, they were $3K each, that is why I never even mentioned to you :D
Oh, and at that price they were sold in 1 day, talk about fast bucks

Most LFS with the right connectiond can ORDER them...now if they can actually get them...that is a different story! I have seen the order list from several different wholesalers out in LA with stuff like Gem Tangs, black tangs, clarion angels, ect on them....but the chance of them getting it is slim to none! They go to places like Live Aquaria and Marine Center as soon as they are available since they are the one who are always doing large orders from these guys....thats the hard part of it! All the really good stuff goes to the big guys! Also most lfs dont want to order these high ticket fish without a downpayment on it first! they dont want to sit on a fish for a few months or even worse, have it die and be out several hundred dollers....plus shipping!! its a lot of risk to bring in a 3k fish when all you mostly sell are the ones for 20$!!

Locally, I would suggest checking out Jawz. They stock the largest selection of Tangs I've seen, yes more than Big Al. To my knowledge Jawz is the only store still running that is able to get gems. Marine Life Designs had the best selection of rare fish around. Tom at justrarefish.com in Atlanta ships great fish, and coming from Ga. it's a real short flight.

working at an lfs ill tell you.
we try to get special fish orders in but we cant get what the wholesaler dosnt have. but there is a list and we do try to get everything in. its not like " yeah yeah yeah well get it" we really try

anyways. bigals does have alot of rarer fish and nice sized... but so far the only fish i got from them that lived more then 2 months was a tang
fish i got that died inclued clown fish manderin scooter blenny jawfish ( 3 times) 2 shrimp 2 fire fish and one pajama cardinal
( i now have all those in my tank with the exception of the pajama and scooter. all doing fine) if you get fish there look really closly at them and never buy the day they get them in. ( or the week) sometimes you can get them to hold a fish for you to watch it
