LFS told me...

I went to the LFS in hopes that I might get some peppermint shrimp to see if they will help with my small aiptasia problem and if not they look like a cool shrimp to have anyway.

So I ask the guy that is getting them for me if there is anything special that I will need to know about them as far as acclamation goes. He tells me to just float them and let them swim forward out of the bag because if they come out backwards it will kill them within 24 hours.

Does anybody know if this is true? I was planning on the usual acclimation that I have been doing with my other live stock without letting the LFS water in the tank. When I comes to tank time I gently pour them into the net over a bucket and let them swim free.

I hope this guy is full of it!

Uhm... that's a new one. I guess he means let them come out on their own. But, i wouldn't use that method. Shrimp need a good bit of time to acclimate, i've heard of people slowly changing water over the course of an hour in small increments. Also, i'm like you. I don't like putting anyone else's water in my tank.

I do acclimate between 1 1/2 to 2 hours by taking out a 1/2 cup of the bag water and replacing with a 1/2 cup of my water! :)

By the time they are ready to go in they are pretty much in my tank water. I still like to seperate the LFS water from my tank as much as possable though. That's why i pour them gently into the net and let them go from there.

Thanks,

So I guess my question is....

Is it OK to ok to pour them into the net or do i need to let them swim out of the bag?

 What a bone head at the LFS. Next time you go back you should tell him you let them come out backwords and there still alive.

I just put 2 in my tank today. I netted them though. Floated them for about 15 minutes then a turkey baster every 5 minutes for an hour taking out water as needed.

They swan backwards and disappeared n the rocks. I guess Ill know if I see them floating in the am.

Whatever you do... make them go in to the tank head first :) I am really hoping that you misunderstood that fella... I can't think of a logical reason for it to matter which end comes out of a bag first.

If anything I'd pour them into a net so you don't get the LFS water in your tank (or at least minimize the amount). Never know what they have going on.

But yeah, sounds a little goofy. My Peppermint did a belly flop into my tank. Dude hopped right out of the net.

SWEET!!!

SWEET!!!

Thanks All!

I really thought he was a knucklehead too... He told me that it went for all shrimp and not just the pep's. What an ID10T!!

I knew I could come here and get the goods from you all!!

I was just worried that I might kill them and at 7 bucks a pop I didn't want to waste 21 bucks or harm my brand new shrimp.

I know it was a newb question but like my Dad always said...
"The only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask."

Anyways a couple more turkey basters of water and they are going in by net as usual!

Well now I know the night guy is an idiot... The sad part is that the daytime guy has a degree in marine biology and he rocks. Maybe I shoud stop in on my lunch break so he can inform the night guy a little better!

:D
Thanks again,
