I was wondering if there is a lid or something to help limit the evaporation on my 6 gal tank???

or do i have to build one myself?? if so.....with what and how??

Thanks
Kevin

I don't think you will want to cover it with acrylic. You will need the gas exchange that happens with fresh air to keep things alive in there. Just keep a bucket of ro water near and add some whenever you feed or are near the tank. Also, evaporation is a way of cooling the tank.

Acrylic will tend to droop, glass would be better. You can get a piece cut at Home Despot, or if you know of a DIY picture frame shop you can probably get one there. Just be sure to leave like an inch or so in the back for fresh air.

racer- sounds good thanks for the input

thurge- thanks for the input as well i will consider the options i still want to test it out, but like for example last night at like 5 i filled up the tank with perfect amount of salinity then put a mark on the back of my tank to mark the level of water......now last night at like midnight it went down a half a cm...now is that common?? i mean i could just put more RO water in but that would be an everyday thing if it goes at that pace......

On my freshwater plant tank I had gotten new lights, and when I put them on the old glass tops, they busted under the heat. I went to a local glass store, and they were able to make new tops that could take the heat within a day. The pirce was very reasonable too. I would recomment going to a place like this instead of homedepot because they can smoot the edges and things

Hate to say it but welcome to the effects of warm water in a dry climate. I probalbly go through a gallon a day in my 58 reef. Thats why Auto topoff's are SOOOOOO nice. SOmething else to consider is that when you add a glass top you will reduce some light transmission, and more the less often you clean the salt creep.

ATO would be the best thing for your tank, any cover may lead to heat problems. If you insist on a top it could be done, but I would need a template for the curve as well as an idea of what you want... Did you want a canopy that covers the entire setup including light or just cover the tank (display or display and overflow?). It would take a bit of work but I think it could be done... I normally wouldn't charge much but it will depend on the time involved to get you what you want.

well im not sure....im just a beginner at this.......an ATO would be sweet i guess but do i need to make one?? calvin at this point i am up in the air.....

Automatic topoffs are fairly simple to make and cheap.

What I do, is have a float valve in the tank set at the right level (about $7 online), and its wired into an air pump (cheap). You run a line from the airpump to a gas tank that has a lid so it can pressurize, and another line from the bottom of the gas tank to your fish tank.
When the float valve turns on the air pump, it pressurizes the gas tank, and pushes water up into the tank. To fill the gas tank, I just unscrew the lid (the airlines are glued through the lid).

I need a topoff too, Im feelin your pain with the evap. problem. I have to put like 5 cups of water in a day!!!!! making me crazy.

If you are putting the float valve inside your tank I would suggest using a snail guard. I wish I could find the site I got my ideas from.
The snail guard is a plastic cover that goes around the float so you don't have a stupid snail crawl up next to it and keep it stuck in the "on" position, flooding your tank.
