We started our new tank with "Life Rock" and live sand. The guy at the LFS said that the salinity for the Life Rock should be at 1.023 or greater or the bacteria would die off. Does this sound accurate? Our tank has been steady at 1.020 for several weeks now. I'm wondering if I'm doing damage to the rock by being that low.

Shoot for between 1.024 and 1.026.
Yes what he said, 1.020 is on the very low side...
PS Just increase it slowly and not in one go!

As stated 1.024-1.026 is the target range..
But you are not doing any harm running it at 1.020..
Many tanks at fish stores run that or even lower to save on salt and they think its better to reduce ich,etc...
You can slowly increase it by putting salt water in when you top off to replace evaporated water or just make your next few water change batches a bit high on the salinity.

All of my LFS run their tanks at 1.020 , so it should be alright to be there.
That being said, you might want to start topping off with saltwater instead of fresh until you hit a salinity of 1.024 (35 ppt)
