Hello Goldfin,
You are in my opinion right on the edge of the fence. With VHOs and the distance a small clam will be ok (only if you feed it well), but as it grows MHs are the only way to keep the maxima happy.

Kinda adding to the above. Typically with clams when the are smaller than 3" they are VERY HEAVY filter feeders and don't really utilize the light too much so your good now. After they are larger than 3" they begin to photosynthesize the light and should really have halides.....
