lighting a 36" tall tank - help

Hi, took folks advice and opinions on the reeflo 250 as a kick butt skimmer and am loving it so far on my smaller reef tanks, now I am on to lighting. My tank is a monster, its 96 x 48 x 36 tall, initially I thought of running my existing 4 x 400W MH with spider reflectors and adding another 2 x 400W (so 2400W total plus some supplemental T5 lighting just for visuals (maybe some actinic), but am now thinking of possibly downgrading to 6 x 250W with lumenbright 3's.

Obvoiusly the 250's would be much cooler and less electricity hogs, but with 36" of water (well, likely 34" of water, 1" sand and 1" air space for the wavebox wave) I am unsure if the 250's would be enough.

Care to share your opinion, and if you can short cut me to any links of similar tanks, that would be great.

Here is a top down look, maybe 400's in the middle and 250's on the edges (or is that overkill?) - the grey is the live rock formation, the black is flow pattern, the blue circles are approx light spread.

Thanks in advance

Id like to follow this too because I have a 250 over my 36" deep tank and so far so good but I dont have alot of light demanding corals either.

Mark, 4 x 400w is plenty if you are using Lumen bright reflector large 20x20x8 and have it set approx 19-20" above the tank. It will helps reduce heat, plenty of light to your corals. IMO, 250w ain't gonna cut it with the 36" tall tank unless you plan to keep deep water species toward the bottom :D. My friend Dennis (Hogall) has the same dimension tank as your and i recommend him to use 2x1000w on light mover but he doesn't plan on keep SPS therefore i recommend 2x400 on light mover and Lumen Bright large with Radium bulb.

I have the same size tank as your except it is 24" tall and i am using 2 x 1000w with Sfiligoi Exaggerate pendants, Reeflux 10k and light mover, no T-5 or VHO except i am going to run 10 150w spotlight from WON Brother with 14k and 20k bulbs just to simulate sunset and sunrise and 2 x 30w halogen also from WON brother with blue lens for moonlight.... Remember my tank will be full of SPS>...

If you are using Electronic ballast like Ice Cap or Coralvue 400w, try the Ushio 14k... It is a par monster...

A pic to show the bracing that I have to contend with (3/4" acrylic, yet to be polished)

The tank is 96 long x 48 wide x 36 high.
