Lighting a species tank

I'm planning a 30x30x24 species tank. Haven't decided on Magnifica or Gigantea anemone. Either way it will be the one anemone and a pair of Onyx clowns. The tank will have a 4" sand bed and about 100lbs of LR. I plan to light the tank with a single Lumenarc (full size) and a 20k Radium bulb. Can I get away with 250w or do I need 400w?

I knew it wouldnt take you long to get back into the swing of things.

I got some good leads on Blue gignatea. We can try and get two for a cheaper price. PM me on NJ reefers.

If you need any help with the new tank let me know.

Its hard to say what you can "get away with", but I have my gigantea 8" below a 250w 10k de bulb. If I were to get radiums, I would go 400w .... but that is just me.... man ways to skin a cat...

I have a gignatea 6 inches under a Aquatinics tx5 fixture.

Its healthy and eating. First day it was 6 inches three weeks later and its about 12 -15.

The previous owner had it under 250 Reeflux and it didnt get any bigger after a year. I am starting to drink watts per gallon dont mean crap koolaide. Ive got Zoas and SPS under this fixture too and all have seen significant growth since the switch from MH to t5.

Re: T-5

Not to be argumentative, but I haven't seen any long term success stories with gigantea or magnifica under florescents. I have only had my gigantea for 10 months, so mine isn't a success story by any means, but hopefully some others who have years of success under their belt will chime in. FWIW, my new tank which is being set up as a S. gigantea species tank is 48x30x17 and will be lit by 2x175w 10k and 1x250w 10k single ended bulbs.

If you can provide 150 Watts of t5 comparable to a 150 watt MH.

Is there that much difference.

At 17 inches EJ it might burn those anemones up. I have found in my expeirecne that MH burn too hot and in a deeper tank they work, but in a short tank like my breeder, they would be 6inches from anemone. A MH that close to an anemone would generate too much heat.

I beleive Most of the guys like Rod have higher mixed reefs and if you notice most of the anemones climb to the highest perch to get light. ( They can chime in to discredit or reaffirm )

Im seriously starting to think that breeder size tanks are perfect anemone clown species tanks.

Gigantea are found in low lying areas and can sometimes be its blown all over the place. Sometimes the folds of the base will blow up and expose the verrucrece.

I hope more people chime in.

Re: T-5

The main difference is that MH a point source of light unlike t5s. In the case of magnifica, there is some anecdotal evidence that point sources of light are important to stopm the animal from wandering.

I respectfully disagree about burning up. I would place my gigantea directly under 1000w halides if my tank and pocketbok could handle it. These species are often found in less than a meter of water. My current animal is directly below a 250w halide.

Breeders are very nice but much, much too small for an established gigantea or mag
