Im a starting up my 35 gal. (24 in.deep) tank that is a hexagon shaped and I only want to put zoas in it. My problem is that the tank has a crappy plastic hood for the flourescent bulb fixtures. I have had a hard time finding a canopy this shape. Can anybody give me a minimum light requirement that would work with the dimensions of the tank. The best thing I have came up with is the hang-on Metal halide bulbs. Again I have no way of doing a retro fit cuz there is no canopy, just the hood that the tank came with? Thanks

when i had a 45 gal hex with zoas i hung a 400 watt halide over it.....

then again thats way overkill on light, but there is a niceness about zoas and halides i believe. Maybe you could look into a halide pendent like 150wat to250 wat, that way you wouldnt be limited on the corals you could get.
But you said only zoas, so zoas can take a very minimal amount of light. i had them under pcs around 12 inches away from surface and they did ok, just dont look great.

IMHO, if you have the budget, get a halide pendent. they are the best lights for a hex reef.
