Lighting for clam

Hello all I am looking to get a clam and was wondering if 4x24 watt t-5 would be sufficient lighting for any type of clam?, I have a 29 gallon tank
Thanks

Maybe a Derasa or Squamosa. For T5s I would think that one would want a lot more wattage for Maxima or Crocea (personally I won't put them under anything but MH)

There are other considerations, though. Make sure all your fish are compatible, etc. and you can met their chemistry requirements before buying. Good luck! :)

my tank has been set up for 4-5 years i think, and those are the biggest wattage lights I can find that are made by a known brand, and the one fish that concerns me is my flame angel

Agreed about the Angel.

I maintain whatI said above. I think with that wattage you're probably limited to squamosa or derasa. But, no matter how long your tank isset up, you need to test for and maintain CA, ALK, etc, which is so crucial for clams.

Not hard, but do know that they will outgrow your tank. Derasa's are also one of the more finicky clams chemically, so make your your SG, Temp, PH, ALK, CA, etc. are rock steady and fluctuate as little as possible. (Still true for Squamosa, just more so for derasa)

ok well I did a little resaearch and was looking at VHO retrofit kits and saw some made by icecap and was wondering if these would be better for maybe a smaller type clam: icecap vho flourescent lighting system 2*75 3*75 4*75- 150, 225, 300 watts
Would they be better for a clam like crocea or maxima?
Thanks

Much, I am running 330w of 50/50 VHO with a crocea, have had it for about a year & a half. It is also about 9 inches below the water line. My clam is about 6 inches so it is doable, just keep it up high and keep your Kelvin in the 10K range.

I have this other thread going in lighting and filtration and seems like people like t-5s better so I think I am changing my mind again

T-5's are glorified power compacts. the bulbs are just stretched out PC's . the only thing they have going for them is the parabolic reflector. i would choose a VHO over a t-5 any day, but if you don't want any problems go with MH

I cant go with mh parents wont let me so its between t-5 and vho and in the other thread it seems like t-5 is winning

T- 5s dont last as long as they say. find out how the par test were done. im sure that the t-5s had the parabolic reflector, and Vho with out a reflector. then compare the start up price of both then the bulb replacement price. after you do that VHO are going to look very good:).

go post in the other thread about lighting and argue with them because I am so confused right now got post in lighting and filtration forum and its under VHO v T-5
Thanks
Duds

im not going to argue with anyone:) i read the thread over there.you will spend less $ on start up with VHO,get the same light out put from VHO's(with the internal reflector) as T-5's and you can buy 3 VHO bulbs for every one T-5, and the bulbs last just about as long. ask them to compare T-5's to PC's with out the reflector, there the same thing .just tring to save you some cash, and get the bang for the buck that you want

did you read the thread? Doesn't seem like it to me. Kinda strange that you would damn t-5s as being glorified pcs and then not even look or debate.
