Started a 40 gallon hex tank 2 months ago. Tank is doing well with live rock, sand, 3 small coral, a maroon clown and a coral beauty. We are using a 15watts fluorescent light from a fresh water tank.
tank is 23 inches wide, and 21.5 in ht.
What type light?
How many watts?
Best place to purchase used model?

Go with T5, PC, or VHO. If you're keeping some corals go with 4-6w/ gal. If you want clams and/or sps (acropora, montipora, etc....) you will need metal halides.

What are the dimensions of the tank?

Best place to purchase used is the selling/trading forums on this site.

What do you want to keep?
That will dictate the lighting

I had a single 250w MH over my 60g hex
You could use T-5 or MH
