I have a 60 gallon hex tank that's 24" across at the top (from the parallel part of the hex -- its wider measuring from the points) and about 30" deep. I want to upgrade my lighting to some type of "all-in-one" halide/PC fixture (I've been looking at a 24" Coralife Aqualight Pro fixture) but I'm not sure how powerful the halide actually needs to be. I've heard everything from the 250W would be too hot to the more light the merrier. The difference between the 150W and 250W version is about $100 and I would rather spend that money on something else (like corals) if I can.
Because its a deeper tank (I know the shape is weird and difficult, but its what I've got) I'd like to be able to grow hard corals up top and softies down below. On the Coralife fixture I'm looking at, the total wattage is 380W for the 150 and 480W for the 250.
Which one would you advise? 150 or 250? Or maybe the Coralife fixture is crap and you'd advise sometime completely different. Any help would be appreciated.
