My son's tank currently has PC Lighting on a 24" 36watt Jebo fixture. my question is for a 24"x12" tank are there any 24" T5 fixtures or any other fairly low cost lighting that you guys can recommend?

This is a current pic of my son's tank

The picture is not great, my son used my cell phone to take the pic

I know its not the best brand in the world but aquatraders dot com has some pretty neat lights for DIRT cheap. I know you get what you pay for and yada yada but for something on a budget you cant beat 4xt5 and 2 moon lights for 50 bucks.

Save up and go LED. or DIT LED kits. It will save you on energy and bulb replacement in the long run. A lot of people I've talked to really like LEDs and wouldn't go back to MH or T5s.

:)

I do understand LED's might be the way to go in the future, but since my son is saving to buy the stuff for his tank i have his budget to deal with. He does not want me to help him with money, he says dad i want to do this all alone and say bought most of this with my own money.

My wife and i might be nice and buy him his lighting upgrade for Christmas or tax time, but for now this is all my son. The best part is he is only 9 and already understands saving for something he really loves and appreciates all the help he has received along the way.

AquaticLife makes a 4-bulb 24" T5 fixture. It has 3 separate timers (daylight, actinic, LED moonlight) and one plug.

Here is a crazy thought. Just run the PC lighting. I ran that type of light for almost a year. My tank did great. I upgraded when I started doing SPS.

I had that thought of letting my son just stay with his PC Lighting, but after seeing the sps frags at the CFM this month he wants to have some.

He is a great kid keeping up with our hobby, homework and chores. He shows such much enthusiasm towards reef keeping, i have to support him however i can.

What's your sons budget? It'll be easier if folks know what your
Son is working with. But, I also think if you're thinking of gifting him
his lighting upgrade for Xmas, then why would he need to fork over his hard-earned savings now?One main lesson of this hobby is patience, something I wish I'd learned at your son's age.

I had been thinking of getting him the lighting for xmas, but after i told my wife that i was thinking of that she said heck no. Instead of that take the family to Disneyland.
