wat is the minimum light i can use for a refguim i want to bet algae that can be benifical and double as food

Alot of people have good luck with the compact flourescent bulbs available at hd. they use about 15w or so and put out the equivalent of 75w or more.....use the daylight versions they put out about 6500k

You could use a standard aquarium light. Are you talking about a N.O. fluorescent? 5000k or above would work fairly good. As long as you don't have a huge, deep fuge.

im thinking of using a 30 gal. but divided into 3 parts fug ref and return pump areas
im thinking of using the standard like that cam w/ the tank if thats ok im not plannin of get alot of plants jsut a few and seaweed so i can feed my tang and angel

what about a standard shop light, outfitted with plant grow bulbs? say, on a tank 17 inches deep....would that produce efficient growth?

I had a 250w metal halide over a 15 gallon tank. Caulerpa grew like mad. Do you know what feeder algae you want yet? Ulva and Gracilaria are both fast growing and good food.

HD has a fluorecent twisty bulb that is 6500K and puts out 75watts of light using only 15watts of power. Lights of America is the brand. I have 2 of them in clip lamps over my fuge. My chaeto has to be pruned every 2 weeks now! I even saw these bulbs at Wal-Mart the day also.

Seriously, they are inexpensive and i was considering 2 of them for my 90 gal setup. Im not looking to keep expensive corals, just fish and live rock. So has anyone out there tried them on their tank?

I know humidity has been a problem for some. I haven't used these fixtures myself. If you plan to use these I think a well ventillated hood is a must.
