Where are you? I came to this page because I'm trying to upgrade my 30 gallon tank to a 65 gallon, and lighting is one of my concerns. I'm not sure if you still have those 36" fixtures, but one of them would probably be good for a tank with a limited selection of coral, would it not? My tank is a species tank for two green spotted puffers, so only corals they will tolerate will be used, and never anything exotic or expensive, due to the risk the puffers pose, a double tube light won't be excessive for that, will it? The current home has only a 24" 50/50 in it, which will not be enough for a 65 by a long shot.

Hey Nick,

Welcome to ReefCentral and Lira.

I really dont think that type of fixture will support any corals. Maybe some zoos and softies (which I admittedly dont know much about), but I think that those would be munched.

My suggestion would be to pull together a t5 setup. If you want fancy they can get expensive, but they are easy to make (Spraklecat is the master), and not expensive in that case.

Best,

Justin

Thanks for the welcome. I'm having luck so far with the mushrooms, it doesn't seem to have to do with texture with these guys so much as anything with a remotely worm like part gets munched. Buying live rock slowly over time is really straining me financially as is, these lights seemed like a decent solution and match the length of the tank, do you mean my current light is clearly not sufficient, or that one or both of the 36" fixtures would not be?

sorry nick i thought you wanted the 72" light. thats what i told you about in the pm. as for the 36" ones i dont think you can keep coral under them at least i dont think so.

Current lighting is one 24" 50/50 bulb, which seems to keep mushrooms alive, I'm not even considering any expensive or elaborate needs corals, the puffers might munch them anytime, I just need something that will keep some interesting to look at, cheap things like mushrooms alive, I'm mostly putting any kind of coral in to make the LR more interesting, it's very boring on it's own.

im not saying they will keep corals alaive but your more then welcome to buy them if you like. live plants didnt do very well under them but im not sure about mushrooms. if i may so recomend get a cheep power compact fixture for mushrooms

I guess I'll have to think for a bit, a 65 gallon tank is going to need a lot more light penetration than a 30 gallon would, being so much deeper.

Nick the wattage per gallon is important with corals. The length of the fixture is dictated by the size of your tank. I am not sure of the math but you want at least 3 watts per gallon. I think that is the case but you might want to look in the lighting forum or post a question about lighting you will get help from someone alot more experienced than me.

The 65 I'm looking at is 36", thats why I was wondering about that length hood, but even if both fixtures were running I don't think it would be near 200 watts, which is apparently what I'd need for corals...
