limits of overflows

is the volume an overflow can drain based on the size of the hole or the size of the overflow chamber? or both?

i was thinking of building a manifold for returns and using the return bulkhead in the overflow as a second drian. plumb the second drain right into the input of a pump to supply a second manifold setup.

any thoughts?

Linear flow and drain size. a 20 inch long overflow will provide more water so that you can maximize a bigger drain pipe.

Can you out pace your drain pipe simply because the overflow is too large?

You can only out pace a drain pipe by having to large of a pump running water back into the tank. Water will flow over the edge of the overflow in proportion to the input of water into the tank. Its like the catch can volume measurement in HS physics. Your going to displace the same volume out of the tank that you are placing into the tank.
