i've gotta agree with cal. i've had an orange linckia for five months and have to feed it daily. i've cultivated four different species of sponges hoping it would eat them... turns out the starfish only eats shrimp pellets.... normally most people would rejoice after finding this feeding revelation, but it's a pita. it takes me about half an hour to get it to actually fixate and realize it's food, and not a disturbance to avoid. and that's when it is within reach of the feeding tube i use to drop the pellets into one of the angles. that's after shooing all the other competitors away.
i have caught it with it's stomach out on some rock, but i'm concerned it's not getting its full nutritional requirements.... those shrimp pellets remind me of sugary seafood cereal. it's not receding or shrinking or falling apart, but i'm starting to fear that a crappy diet of fish pellets is not enough. i keep tempting it with other foods, everything i can get my hands on, but the pellets are the only thing i think are keeping it alive.
paullondon has also had success with his orange linckia feeding on prepared foods, so it's not so outrageous to own one, it just takes dedication that could overstep the purpose of owning one.
i've heard of people keeping cd covers in dirty tank water for months to cultivate life for the star to feed on. i've tried that without any success. it might work for other species.
