lion fish space

The lionfish you are looking at reaches well over a foot in size and even larger as an adult. One other thing you need to look at is that lionfish grow very fast. I wouldn't put a volitans in anything less than an 8' tank that's 2.5' wide for long term. I have no idea why people are posting 55 and 70 gallon tank will be fine. Yea, maybe for a month but not much longer than that. I would look into getting a dwarf lion if you don't have a larger tank. A fuzzy or Zebra lion for example, would be fine in a 55-75 gallon tank.

I have 6 in a 265 (7' x 2'x 30"). Seems to be enough room. They do get big and do grow fast. 8' x 2.5' is a bit over kill, but a 55 is too small. A 55 gallon tank is only about 12" maube 14" wide. The lion fins spread out would hit both sides. Put some rock in the tank and you would be completly out of room. I think the lengh of the tank is less important then the width.

What about Dwarf lions, what's minimum for them?

I would have to say 50+ gallons for dwarf lions. I myself have kept two in a 75 and I felt that it seemed too crowed for two full sized dwarf lions.

I have a dwarf zebra in a 75 and a small scorpionfish in a 20 by itself (likely to get moved into a larger tank with similar tankmates). Seems to be working well.
