I had a Volitan Lion for a while and read up a lot about them before and after I got him. Sometimes starving them a bit will cause them to go after almost anything (Almost) - Mine would eat frozen Silversides. I have read that when you get them started eating live foods it is hard to get them to eat frozen, You may want to go a few days without feed then try and entice him to eat silversides, Mysids or anything like that.

Just a suggestion, the important thing is experiment with different things Your's may respond differently

Hope this helps

thanks very much,

but he has only eaten about three times ina month.....once the ghost shrimps and twice live brine .....

so he must be hungry........

put the ghost shrimp on a feeding stick. do this for several feedings until it recognizes the stick as a food source. whe nit does swap out the shrimp for some krill or silversides. It may take some persistance, but generally this method works well.

have u tried????

have u tried????

hi, have u tried some liquid garlic? a few drops on the frozen food while it is thawing out worked for me. garlic is very attractive to their senses and stimulates appetite. also helps with immune system. can't hurt! let us know!

OK, this is going to get me flamed but here is how I have trained lions.

First get them eating well, I personally used gut loaded ghost shrimp. Then when they learn that YOU are the bringer of the food, and start begging at you is the time for transition. I myself go to the LFS and get about 3-5 guppies or minnows depending on the size of the fish.
When you walk up to the tank and the lion responds, put in your feeding stick and drop the live food next to the stick. Then they learn that the stick and food go together and that he recognizes that food looks like a fish. Do that for a few days. Then put a small silver side on the stick and when you walk over and open the tank, they should take the silverside immediately before they even realize it isnt alive nor that it is attached to the stick. Then you should be home free... and able to get them onto other food once they realize the stick means food...

Good luck - it is really pretty easy!

thanks very much ....will try this....

if he is slow the eel will quickly take them....he learnt to take the food from the stick quickly

Try not too big thongs to not scare him (just a guess), he should see the piece, move it to imitate alive food, but drop it after catching lion's attention, he will inspect food and if finds it deserving attention, may be eats it (not every piece). Every fish has own personality, some people had flopped food onto the water surface several times to imitate live fish' beating...
Try frozen salmon or shrimp (check package for an absence of salt and preservatives).
My volitan started to eat since first try - defrozen food planned for another fish.
Here is preparation for a feeding:

My Volitan took 3 months before he started eating frozen, but my Fuzzy dwarf took to frozen mysis from the start. Like someone else said just feed the lion live glass shrimp for awhile then starve him for awhile to get him to eat frozen.

thanks everyone for all your help......appreciate it all greatly

i will keep trying.........maybe time will be the answer
