Lionfish and Quinine Sulfate

I have previously treated any new fish in a QT with Quinine Sulfate (QS).

Last weekend I got a 4"-5" Volitan Lionfish. On day 2 I got him to eat some frozen food. He has been eating frozen food every day and all seems good.

I see no signs of disease, but want to treat anyway just in case. I was planning on a dose of QS and eventually a dose or two of Prazipro.

I read that copper should not be used with Lionfish but what about QS?

thanks,

Mike

Lionfish continued to show no signs of ich or anything, but I do not want to take a chance putting in my display so this morning I dosed with QS. I used the same dose as I have done in the past of 1.25 teaspoons for my 55 gallon QT (recommended .25 teaspoon per 10 gallons).

About five minutes after adding it, the fish was very active. swimming around. I am not sure if the QS is irritating the fish or if just me by the tank with room lights on was causing the activity. Hopefully he will be fine.

I did read on webmd about treating lions with QS of they had ich so I figured it would be ok.

thanks,

Mike

I have no direct experience; but I've never read anything negative about lions & QS on the RC disease forum over the last several years. I think you'll be fine. FWIW: I've used Cupramine (copper) on many lions over many years, keeping it near the minimal therapeutic dose, never had a problem.

Thanks. The lionfish still seems irritated. Swimming around more. I have watched him at night and not on weekends so maybe I have not noticed it in the last couple of weeks. I guess active is better than lethargic. I will stay the course. I just need to leave the QS in there for 7 days and then use carbon to take it out. I have also read it dissipates over time.

thanks again.

You've hit one of the reasons the reasons that I don't use QS. Some fans of QS claim that it kills ich in the cyst phase. I have never seen anything to back this up; so new ich parasites could be released long after the 7 days. I don't think QS is just voodoo, like most ich cures, but don't trust it. In any case, I would keep the lion in the QT for several weeks after the QS is removed and observe carefully for signs of ich
