Lionfish shedding mucus layer

Hello. I have a volitan lionfish I introduced into my tank about 2 weeks ago. He is eating great and behaving normal... He just hangs out during the day and swims around at night. His tankmates are a snowflake eel, Niger trigger, & mandarin. The past 2 days he has shed part of his mucus layer. His eyes are not cloudy and he has no signs of ich. Tank parameters are perfect! Nitrates 0 nitrites 0 ammonia 0 ph 8.1 any one have ideas of what could be going on with him? We are about to introduce a Radiata and dont want to if he's in trouble. Thanks for your input!

I have 7 of them and they tend to shed or sluff their mucous layer once a month with no ill effects that I've detected. They are the only fish I've worked with that sluff their mucous layer. If anyone has any ideas about this, I would be interested.

They do this from time to time as they grow, nothing bad. I want to say that I've read that anglers and such will do this as well as they tend to get things growing on them since they don't move as much, not 100% sure though.

Your mandarin may not last too long in that tank, also triggers and lions usually don't do to well together. Also volitans get BIG, think a football sitting in your tank without fins. I had one in a 90 thinking that he would be fine but he quickly out grew that tank, and with the stocking as it is now aggression will probably be a problem. I would not recommend adding another lion to your set up unless you have a larger 120+ gallon tank that you can move your volitan into in a few months. Not trying to bash your tank, just don't want to see a post in a bit saying you've lost anyone.

Good luck!
