LIRA Public Relations

Hello all LIRA members. First, I want to apologize for my delay in putting up this post. This was an unusually hectic week for me on the family and business front. Second, I want to thank all of you for your confidence and faith in electing me to this position. I also want to thank Eric for all of his efforts. I do not think the membership could have made a bad decision in choosing either one of us. I look forward to Eric's input as he also has some very good ideas about promoting LIRA.

I started this new thread so that those members that would like to make suggestions or give their input about this subject will be able to do so as well as a place for me to keep the membership informed about what I am doing in my role as Public Relations Officer. The only thing I ask is that when making suggestions please be willing to help implement them also.

To start I would outline just a few of the ideas/projects I will begin working on in the near future.

The first item on my agenda is to continue to develop the contact I made recently with Scott Berkowitz, the advertising manager for Bowtie, Inc. (FAMA and Aquarium Fish Magazine). I think he will be an invaluable resource for making contact with potential vendors and donators for NERAC III. He attended NERAC II and was very impressed. I hope to also get them to cover next years conference as well as help us potentially advertise the event in the publications.

After last weeks meeting the thought struck me that we should reach out to the students at the schools where we have reef tanks placed. These kids are potential members and the future of our hobby and I would like to work with the board to develop a program through promotion and a potential membership discount to get them more directly involved with LIRA.

The other item I would like to work on as soon as possible is a joint meeting with the Boston area reef club. As many of you who attended NERAC might have noticed we had a lot of support from the Boston area, due in large part to Joe's lecture to their club last year. They were a great bunch of people and I think a closer relationship with them could be benificial to us all. Maybe we'll meet in the middle at Mohegan Sun!!!

Again these are just a few of my ideas. I look forward to your comments and suggestions and again thank you all for your confidence in me. I will endeavor to do the job to the best of my ability.

sounds good Craig!

Craig,

There was a thread about starting a LIRA newsletter for members and prospective members. I think that a newsletter in hard copy or e-mail format would be a great project to kick off your leadership dynasty.

Excellent idea...

I think the greatest thing that is lacking would be the advertisement of our club at potential stores. I think we need to design a poster of some sort that would hold business cards that contain info on us, our website and at reefcentral. It should offer to assist them with any questions they may have after their purchase.

We should also foster a relationship with the store owners, so that they can offer advice to customers but say " check this club out, they can answer questions with more detail or help you with a problem. Also at the register, point to the sign & attach a card to their receipt.

Crabby Craig... not the warmest fuzziest name for a PR guy :)

Great to have you aBoard, send me your email address so we can get you on the mailing list.

Joe

Good Suggestions

Good Suggestions

Thanks for the encouragement and suggestions guys. All of them are good.
Vinny - How often do you think we should do a newsletter? I will be happy to work out the logistics of getting it printed (Dave) and mailed (me) as often as you are able to write it. I know how eloquent you are so I figured you would want to compose it. :eek1: We can talk about it Saturday at the workshop. Oh wait, that's right you wanted to spend more time with your wife so you won't be there. I guess we will talk next week.

Doug - Thanks I though so also.

Eric - I think Melton and I could design a poster with some graphics we already have for the club. Once we do that we will need some members who can get out to the LFS's. I think the best way may be to get some members to volunteer to cover the stores within a 5-10 mile radius of their house. Most of us probably know the people in the LFS's in our local areas.

I would also like to take a few minutes during schmooze time at the next meeting and sit down with some of you that are looking to help so we can start to implement some of these things.
Thanks

Craig...just another ideaââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦.I mentioned this at the Kwalk workshop before you had arrived. The ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“guysââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ seemed to like the idea and suggested that I mention it to you. However, I did not have a chance to really talk about it once the workshop was in progress. So here it isââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Âin a bit more detail.

A couple of weeks ago, I had just attended my first LIRA meeting. Let me say, that I enjoyed myself at the meeting. It was good to see a few of you that I had met at Nerac, as well as on line here at RC. Thank you to everyone who works hard to organize, mediate and be there for the rest of us. I know it is a lot of work, and the expressed appreciation is not always thereââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦. it should be, so thank you again.

I agree that it is a great idea to reach out to the next generation of reefers to brainwash them, I mean ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“reelââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ them into the hobby. This is important.

However, we seem to missing a whole groupââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Âour group. We need to also reel in the adults that come to the meeting. (After all, they have more money to spend at the auctions/raffles!)

During the last LIRA Meeting, I noticed a lack of effort to meet and talk to those people who had come to LIRA for the first time (or recent members). There were several people coming to the meeting for the first time, I know this, because I ended up introducing myself to them. We all know it is never easy to ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“joinââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ an existing club by yourself. I also had an opportunity to talk with a few of you hard-core reefers!

Of course, I was already thinking of what could be doneââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦In a land far far away, I was part of running another organization where we established ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œGreetersââ"šÂ¬Ã‚. The Greeters would make a concentrated effort to seek out the new people, or those not talking to anyone else, perhaps welcoming people at the door, introducing new people to others, talking with them, and helping them feel comfortable. We even made Greeter badges, which were optional. Some of the Greeters preferred the badges so that when they talked to someone new, the new person knew why, and did not have to stress over the possibility that they would be used for their oh so hot coral frag!

The concept was to have about 5-6 Greeters (at minimum) with maybe a ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“Topââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ Greeter to help ensure that all is going, as it should. However, it must be a joint effort with all involved. More Greeters are needed if those who volunteer are not able to attend most meetings. Greeters should be both male and female. Multiple Greeters allow for various ongoing chats, as well as knowing it is ok if one Greeter could not attend a particular meeting because the rest would be there. This really helped people feel more comfortable and meet others, instead of standing around, and perhaps not returning. This ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œgreeter activityââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ seemed to truly make a difference in regards to encouraging others to want to return to the next meeting.

Whether or not we use the term ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œGreetersââ"šÂ¬Ã‚, or some other word, I believe that the concept of drawing in those who come to the LIRA Meetings is important.

What do you guys/gals think?

Great ideas!

The poster idea should work. I went from store to store for years without knowing about any reef clubs in the area.

Newsletter...awesome

new member greeters...best idea yet. No different than any organization this club can be intimidating at first. When we have a first time member at the gym we make sure to give them a little extra in order to get them acclimated. They may have joined this year but if they are not made to feel like a part of the organization they may only come once and never return. Same concept for LIRA.

OK,
I see all the ideas and this is great.
Now I want to see volunteers for these ideas.
Members have brought up several ideas in the past and said they would volunteer to do them but nother ever came of it.

When I joined LIRA there was a one page website that never changed. I took it upon myself to volunteer my time to do it. Grant it I am no HTML wizard. But we have a site. Somtime things in life get crazy and I will forget to update somthing but it always gets done when I have the time.

So if your looking for the BOD blessings on your ideas, you have mine. Just step up and do it.

Alot of members in the past were upset that the BOD didn't act on their ideas. Well frankly the BOD's efforts were dealing with and acting upon other issues concerning and running LIRA.

I was watching the movie Robots with my daughter the otherday. There was a great saying in this movie. " If you see a need. Fill a need"

Thats what I am saying here. Just do it. If you need help or assistance from the BOD just ask.

Eric

Maybe these ideas should be discussed at the next meeting.....and actually 'take names'

Now would be a perfect time for one of the members to take this to our private forum, where other members can sign up/volunteer. Discuss new projects. Take a couple of polls etc.

This is why we have that forum to handle/discuss club business.

Hello all,
Lots of good points to be addressed for sure. We, the Board look forward to addressing these and other improvements of LIRA, so yes lets take it to the private forum to finalize the details of what the next steps will be.
I have some other ideas worth pursuing, like expanding the classroom tank programs and getting at least one LIRA member attached (whether we use epoxy or crazy glue;) ) to each classroom tank.
Thanks again,
Joe
